Splitter

Hi all,

I currently have a Tivo box, V+ box and broadband.
The broadband is fed via the outside wall, upstairs and into a bedroom to the Superhub. Downstairs a two way splitter provides the connections to the Tivo in the front room and V+ box in the back room.
Im looking to use a three way splitter so I can relocate the Superhub to the front room.
Is this advisable?
Thanks for any info

Re: Splitter

It's doable as long as the power levels stay within acceptable margins.

You won't know until you try it though.

Re: Splitter

Very important what Pip has said. The three way splitters have odd attenuation characteristics. On mine, one of the ports is -7db.

Indeed. They come in a couple of varieties. One is the signal split into 3 directly, ~5.5dB loss on all ports, the other a single split then one of the legs of that split split again, providing one port of ~3.5dB loss, usually labelled the 'power port', and two of ~7dB.

Off topic but when I saw the title I thought PFJ or JPF

Re: Splitter

Thanks for the replies and info.
Just to add a bit extra. The original cable which enter the house splits immediately. One into the Tivo box and another leading to a V+ box in the back room.
Would it be possible to split at the V+ box end? ie split a cable, which in theory has been split already?

Many thanks

As long as the power permits it certainly. Can split as many times as you want, the only issues are the power levels and SNR.

Thanks, is there a way of me finding this out?

Yes. Look at the power levels reported by whatever is connected on that leg right now.

If it's a TiVo I'll leave someone who has one to advise

No sooner said than done:

However........ "Danger Danger Will Robinson! Alien Xmas presents detected!.....

The Tivo signal stats are not totally reliable/accurate - nor to a certain lesser extent is the BB Shub!

You can't accurately get RxMer/SNR/FEC data on the upstream. So unless you have VM sourced "splitter" and "patch" cable then you're totally reliant on someone like QAS pointing you to the correct vendor source/part!
The engineer will have a pad/JDSU 1250 handheld DOCSIS metering and access to RedTools etc. Which provided he's got a calibrated meter with correct Area code configuration will be a lot more accurate for both downstream/upstream assessment.

That said when you're beta testing multiple firmware/hardware on both BB and Tivo some of us have to employ cascaded splitters/patch cables ourselves! (fortunately I'm close enough to streetcab and set the tap so I can just about run 2 SuperHubs and Tivo from my single internal drop)

Thanks,
Its seems realistically im not going to get accurate data. So is it something I could simply just try (the splitter) or could I risk damaging equipment/signals?
If it didn't work would it just be a case or a poor signal (tv or internet)

Re: Splitter

Try it, if it doesn't work just change it back.

You won't damage anything with the attempt.
