As I said earlier, this is a highly commercialy sensitive situation. Nobody at VM is in a position to confirm anything until the embargo is lifted, even if they do know.

The sums can add up by taking a small cut from every XL subscription as opposed to a lot fewer full price subscriptions.
However, BT would prefer people took their broadband from themselves and received BT Sports (Initially) for free.
Those who will not or cannot leave VM are unlikely to get their broadband from BT, so in essence it is a case of XL or add on.
BT believe that including their channels within XL could devalue the BT Sports brand.
It's a case of will the numbers add up after being crunched and BT being persuaded that going into XL would not affect their premium branding for BT Sports.
Setanta did it first, but they were desperate. ESPN initially said no to XL, citing this as being one of the reasons that Setanta went under. After the subscription revenue was presented to them along with the extra that they could charge advertisers due to the vastly increased consumer base, they changed their minds...

I wonder if Virgin are frantically trying to get new channels on XL to replace ESPN, after assuming they could just add BT Sport to XL and have now realised that they won't be able to, and know that customers that have been ringing VM threatening to drop packages/leave?

It looks like BT Sports will be a standalone package then. VM better think twice about the cost of XL then.

Or Virgin will reuse ESPN Money to get more channels on the Basic M, M+, L or XL packages.

I can't see any other channels that equate to the value of ESPN. The only channel that seems to be on most people's list is Sky Atlantic, but it isn't in the same price bracket.

Virgin may do the following with the money save on ESPN:
-The cost of the XL Package may stay as now in 2014.
-New Channels will launch.

Isn't there any chance they will lower the cost of the XL package?

Because there are a whole pile of commercial, legal and technical details to sort out. Both sides want to make sure everything is done properly.
It's a bit like buying a house. You get there in the end, but it takes time.
