B T Drop line help

Hi all Merry Christmas,
i need some help i am with virgin media,cable for phone, TV and bband,...my problem is i am going to replace a rotten front window and have noticed the BT drop line from the mast is attached to the frame instead of the wall.
it only needs to move about 6"

1/ is this something i can do myself?
2/Do i need to call out BT?
3/should it be on my window frame?
4/ any idea of cost if BT do it as i am not a BT customer ?
any help greatly appreciated

I had the same issue a long time ago and when we removed the cable it was to heavy to reattach as we did not have the correct tensioner or whatever they use, so as I was no longer a customer I just wound it around the telegraph pole and left it at that.


Take a photograph before removal for reference as it should not have been attached to a window frame and BT would want to charge for its removal.

Masque's solution is valid, I.e. as this is attached to your property the answer is simple - cut the offending cable off and wrap it around the pole.

I also had the same issue and found great delight in removing this last poxy remnant of BT from my property. In fact I've recently had my soffits and gutters replaced so had the rest of their rubbish removed also and if I could get away with it, I'd do the same to all of the other BT cables that come across my land (to adjacent properties) also.

My removal was for the same reason as yours replacement of my soffits and fascia boards as the other option was cutting around the connection.

I have no intention of a return to BT so glad to see the end of them, the cable was removed some time over the following months and no one knocked at my door.

Of course if the window is rotten it would be really likely that the dropline would pull loose by itself...

So out of politeness you could notify BT of the circumstances and ask them to tidy up their property.

I come accross this all the time .You cannot cut or damage the line it is the property of BT and was put there at the request of a customer so is legally there .The best thing to do is either move it yourself (very easy) ,let the company fitting the window do it or phone BT and get them to do it .(may be chargeable)

I presume you are talking about the triangular bracket that should be fixed to the wall not the window.

People can get in bother by cutting or removing the cable ,i have never heard of it happening but technically the cable is the property of BT and should not be touched

If it is attached to my property and in the course of remedial work it becomes loose it is not my problem so I would just wrap it around their pole, if you request them to remove it they will charge and it could be months and as I said above photograph it screwed to your window before removal.

Normally if the line is inactive and passes through a window or is attached to a window there is normally an "accident" (you know how brittle those old BT lines get with age).

A lot of the times a separate contractor is bought in to remove arial cables or any other cable attached to the windows/roofline except the BT lines which have to be BT contractors before i get on site because as you say it takes months for BT to get into gear for what is a 10min job

Which is exactly the reason to remove it yourself especially if it is attached to a window frame that is being replaced, but take a photo of it for proof if ever it is requested.
