Weird email behaviour

I have only had my service since last Thursday and as soon as it was in I sorted out my primary email address.....lets call it 123@virginmedia.com. Later I set up two further mailboxes, an extra one for myself and one for the wife.

I'm using Thunderbird 2 on a Mac which whilst not entirely problem free was set up for the new accounts(s) ok.

The problem is that if I send an email to someone using my 2nd address or the wife's address and the recipient replies the reply is sent to the primary address i.e 123@virginmedia.com. Not only that but the receiving email client also shows that the email was sent by 123@virginmedia.com and not the actual originating address.

What is going on? Has anybody got any ideas how this can be sorted?

Juz

How did you set up the additional mailboxes?

Yes I've done all that, I can both send and receive emails. The problem is with who the addressee see's as the sender and therefore replies to as per the original post.

Re: Weird email behaviour

When you click write in Thunderbird you will see the from line, hover over and it will turn to blue, click it and it will give you the choice of outgoing email address to use, any returning emails will have that address on them.

Oh no they won't.

I've been using Thunderbird for many years with multiple addresses and I'm used to making sure I'm sending emails from the correct identity.

I've just set up Apple Mail and get exactly the same result so it seems that its something peculiar to VM's mail setup and not the email clients.

I've just sent myself an email from my 2nd address to my primary address and when it arrived in the inbox it showed as being sent by itself, the primary address, and not the actual 2nd address.

What login are you using for the SMTP server?

smtp.virginmedia.com with my primary email as the username and its associated password as per instructions

Update

All sorted, just had my obvious mistake pointed out to me elsewhere. Each addresses smtp server username has to match that accounts email address......drrr!!!
