Netgear Connection Speed Is Different To Speedtest.

Hello can anyone help i have a netgear adsl router dg834gt router with talktalk broadband i have today removed the bell wire on the master socket which has increased my connection speed upto 7712kbps, from 6100kbps which is better, but seem to have a problem that when i do a speedtest i only seem to get a average of about 3.5meg why is this? i have put the lastest firmware on and rebooted the router aswell, can any1 help please?

Could be a bottleneck somewhere along the route... Just because you're connected to the exchange/ISP at 7+Mb it doesn't mean that you can download from everywhere at that speed as the fastest speed to a point is only as slow as the slowest point...

Try a few different speed tests sites and only if you're still restricted to 3.5Mb should you start looking at the router

Are you running the speedtest from a wireless connection (maybe a 'B' or'G' card)? If so try it when physically connected to see if there is any difference.

yes running the speedtest from a wireless its the same from a ethernet connection to but i think i have found the problem which might be that i rebooted the router about 5 times, which has lowered my ip profile and it needs to update did test at... http://test.speedtester.bt.com
got a connection speed of 7486kbps, then a lower rate of 3500kbps then acutal of 2850kbps think the ip profile needs to catch up again!?

Some info here about IP profiles and timescales, etc.

I'm thankful I'm on cable now!! Waaayyyy too complicated for me........

thanxs for the link thats what i was looking at, i dont get cable here to rural, but we do get the smell of fresh cow sh*t every morning, lol much better! i think
