router slowing my speed

I have a netgear WGR614 v6 and a virgin cable modem.
When i connect directly to the modem I can get 10mb but once i add the netgear it literally halves my speed.
This is before I add another pc too.

Is this just going to be the netgear router or is there a way to get full speed through it?

That's wireless for you and a completely different issue to the first poster. If you start your own thread people can advise you but if you put ethernet in and the speed is back to what it should be then you are looking at one of the downsides of wireless, speeds are never as good as on ethernet. Have you tried changing the wireless channel you are using?

Does this happen in Windows and in Linux as I know you run linux in the evenings sometimes? If it only happens in the linux enviroment then it will focus the issue there but if you see the same performance issue on both then it could well be router related.

Re: router slowing my speed

It's only on linux, windows can clock 10meg everytime.
it halves on linux though.
I was given a usb 10/100 ethernet adapter from a tech guy at my place and I have to use that or I simply cannot get the connection going on linux

Check your linux wireless drivers, your card is probably running at 11 Mbps, that's why you get only 6 Mbps through wireless. What happens if you use wired connection?

Re: router slowing my speed

I have a wireless router, but my two PC's are wired into it, as wireless is rubbish for gaming and anything else you need a good connection with.

The only thing I use wireless for is my PDA, with which wireless is perfect.
