Slow between Pcs on Router

Hi, my son has a PC upstairs and mine is downstairs. Both are running XP and both are hard wired through a Linksys WRT54GS. When we try and exchange files its very slow. Can anyone help me to check if its setup ok. Both PCs are set to Force 100mbFull Duplex.

Thanks everyone.

Re: Slow between Pcs on Router

There's a few threads on this subject on the Linksys forums, may be worth a look.

Re: Slow between Pcs on Router

the easyest way to speed things up is eather go buy 2 1gig Ethernet cards and a cheap 1 gig switch, plug it into the existing router to get all the routing advantages and yet the speed for all your 1gig pluged kit for around £30.

or seeing as you only have two machines, just a cross-over cable or adapter and patch lead, and connect them directly together.

BTW forcing 100mb Full Duplex doesnt always work, its usually better to just use auto on all the kit including the router.

Re: Slow between Pcs on Router

I agree with popper - forcing 100mbit full duplex can sometimes cause problems. Let them all auto-sense.

Do your LAN PCs have Static IP Addresses or DHCP? If they are static IPs, is one of the DNS servers on the PCs set as the router? If they are set differently it could cause routing issues (router looking at internet before local network for pc being accessed).

Re: Slow between Pcs on Router

Thanks for all your replies. I will try them and see.
Basically, I have a wireless wrt54gs that is being used wired to the two pcs. I also have a 10/100 standard Linksys router - I was under the impression that I could run them together and establish a faster link. Currently, the standard one is not connected. Firstly, I will change them to auto and see. Thanks again though.
Regards 103
