Networking laptop with other machine.
Advice pleas chaps and lasses, I'm after networking my laptop and tower together, I've tried it a few time but can't get the laptop to recognise my tower, I've connected the two with an ethernet cable via the ethernet cards and gone through the motions but nothing happens. Both machines are turned on but like I say nothing hapens, any ideas folks?

Nidge - first - if you connected them directly together you'll need a crossover cable - else you'll need a switch or something similar.
Next - you'll need to set static IP addresses on your NICs. When you have done that - try and ping the two IP addresses from the laptop / machine.
Once you have got that far that us know!

NTL/BB<===>tower-netcard1
laptop-netcard1<===>switch/AP<===>tower-netcard2
set the tower-netcard2 to 192.168.0.1
set the tower-netcard1 to auto
set the laptop to 192.168.0.2
<===> equals straight through cable
<=x=> equals cross-over cable or adaptor , not needed if you have the router/switch/AP as thats the x-over bit.
OHH router not the older kit.....
so its
NTL/BB<===>router-WAN-port
tower<===>router LAN-port1
laptop<===>router LAN-port2

I just want to wire them together so I can swap files from my laptop to my tower, they are sat at the side of each other so a crossover cable would be ok, the router is right at the front of the house, not enough cable to do that.

Thats exactly it...
Crossover cable is the key when connecting directly and not using a router / switch etc.

Re: Networking laptop with other machine.
Isn't there a wizard for networking in my network places? Are both PCs in the same workgroup?

Yeah tried the wizard but all that keeps coming up with is no network connection regarding the ethernet card.

That's because it's still on DHCP - you need to set static IP addresses - see my post above!
