Regardless of whether the issue is religion or not, the newspapers will report it as being religious.

So they have just figured out that getting food supplied by the lowest bidder might mean that it isn't 100% prime cuts of dead animal. Or even 90% of the correct dead animal.
Although to be honest it happening to prisoners makes me chuckle. Until I think about the hordes of lawyers getting ready to screw more taxpayers money out the public for their clients.

But that's only because they didn't have bacon sandwiches in those days.
Anyway, maybe the prospect of 'dodgy' food might deter some people from committing crimes.

Re: 'Traces of pork DNA' found in Halal prison meat
I've been having a ponder, and honestly can't ever remember seeing an (obvious) muslim eating a pie or pastie, or pies and pasties on sale in their ethnic shops.
Maybe it's because a lot of pastry is made with (pork) lard as shortening?

Maybe because the reason the 'ethnic' shops exist is to sell food that isn't widely available in the UK. Same business model as this http://www.britishcornershop.co.uk/
