First some principles. A hub or switch is essentially a junction box. Anything coming in on one wires goes out to every other wire. Thus the modem (or Set Top Box) sees all the computers that are connected and gets brainache as it only knows how to speak to one computer.
A router has a level of intelligence. It intercepts the signals coming from the modem and decides where that signal has to go to. Thus the modem, which is expecting to see only one computer connected to is, in fact sees the router, and nothing past the router, blindly passes the signals to the router and the router then takes over in speaking to more than one computer / console / device.
I'm assuming you tried wiring like:
Modem
-v-
hub
-v- -v-
Computer #1 computer #2
Won't work I'm afraid, but if you put a router where the hub is shown it should all work hunky dory.
The alternative, that I beleive you are now trying is Internet Connection Sharing.
Your wiring shoud be:
modem
-v-
PC#1 (network card #1 or USB adaptor #1)
PC#1 (network card #2)
-v-
PC#2 (network card or USB adapter)
For this to work youwill have to ahve run the Windows Internet Connection Sharing Wizard.
Remember when changing over any connections or devices (computer / router) that go into the modem that you must power the modem off and back on again.
