Re: Help needed plz
Yes but one needs to be on to connect to the internet essentially what you have is no better than a crossover. You'd be better off with a router really.

Re: Help needed plz
OK so now i have another lan card making it 2 in 1 computer, the modem goes straight to the 1 computer and the other connects to the hub then to the main computer, the 2 computers can see each other and share each others folders, but the 2nd computer will not connect to the internet, when explorer is clicked just says page can not be found, i've tryed everything i can think of but it will just not connect. its not the firewall as i have disabled this and still the same.
Any ideas thanks |

First some principles. A hub or switch is essentially a junction box. Anything coming in on one wires goes out to every other wire. Thus the modem (or Set Top Box) sees all the computers that are connected and gets brainache as it only knows how to speak to one computer. A router has a level of intelligence. It intercepts the signals coming from the modem and decides where that signal has to go to. Thus the modem, which is expecting to see only one computer connected to is, in fact sees the router, and nothing past the router, blindly passes the signals to the router and the router then takes over in speaking to more than one computer / console / device. I'm assuming you tried wiring like: Modem -v- hub -v- -v- Computer #1 computer #2 Won't work I'm afraid, but if you put a router where the hub is shown it should all work hunky dory. The alternative, that I beleive you are now trying is Internet Connection Sharing. Your wiring shoud be: modem -v- PC#1 (network card #1 or USB adaptor #1) PC#1 (network card #2) -v- PC#2 (network card or USB adapter) For this to work youwill have to ahve run the Windows Internet Connection Sharing Wizard. Remember when changing over any connections or devices (computer / router) that go into the modem that you must power the modem off and back on again. |
Re: Help needed plz
Hi thanks for the welcome guys.
Rob, your right thats how I set it up the first time and yes thats how I have it set up now, I've run the set up a network wizard, is that the same as internet connection wizard? Ive enabled internet sharing on the host computer. I have 2 local area connections, the one with the modem going into i've left to get and ip automatically, the other i have set up to use 192.168.100.11, on the second computer i have set it to use 192.168.100.12, i've tryed them both the same and that dont work. Do i have to put an ip in the gateway space? thanks |
Re: Help needed plz
Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) isn't something I've actually used. You do need to run it first on the master computer (the one with 2 network connections) and that computer must then remain on whenever you want the second computer to access the internet. You also need to run it on the second computer. Make sure both computers are in the same workgroup.
Have a check on the firewall on the main computer, it might be blocking it. If you have to put an IP in the gateway space it I think it would be the network card connected to the modem. |
