Many reinstalls later it still does it about once every 4 boot-ups.... even after total removal including registry cleanups... and the Firewall lets it connect whenver it wants to.....

Thumbs up Re: ntl Netguard

Just dunped Norton for Netguard. Norton appeared to uninstall OK after I had to go back twice to remove live update and another piece of the software. Netguard installed easily and all seems well. PC appeared to boot faster or it could be my wishful thinking.

Re: ntl Netguard

I installed netguard and was quite happy with until I looked in sygate firewall at what it was doing. The freedom driver installed with it is constantly using bandwidth and quite a lot of it (up to 20kb/s upload). I thought it was just getting updates at first so I watched it closeley for a couple of days and it didn't vary all that much, it just kept going. It was the biggest update ever seen or summit funny is going on.

You sure you dont have spyware or something?

I have had it installed since day one and have never had a problem with it. I dont have any bandwidth being used by it at all. I have turned the auto update off. Whenever I go on my pc I just update it myself then start using my pc for whatever I need to use it for. That way it wont interupt me.

Re: ntl Netguard

My McAfee Internet Security Suite 2004 expires tomorrow, and today the offered me 2006 Ver.8 for a disscounted £25. I decided to hold off renewing Mcafee untill I had found out what NTL's Netguard was like. My searching has led me to this very helpfull site. Having read all the posts in this thread I'm afraid I'm still undecided on wether to ditch Mcafee.
I must say I have found it has done its job in protecting both my son and my own PC's, and alot better than Norton's Internet Security Suite. As it is costly for me to pay for both subscriptions I feel I should try a freebie now as many other people seem to do with no problems. I am dissapointed that NTL have indicated that they will charge when they introduce other features, and they claim the present Netguard service is "over £40's worth" although it doesn't seem to have the equivelant features of the payed for suites I've been using over the last few years.
Anyway as time is running out, can any one offer some expert advice for this undecided subscription paying fool!
Thanks in anticipation.

Re: ntl Netguard

LOL! They don't all run at once. It's a case of what one doesn't catch maybe one of the others will.
It dates back to when I had great faith in the abilities of Spybot and relied upon it alone. After a while Spybot kept telling me my PC was clean and in spite of my thinking my PC was getting sluggish I believed it.
Eventually it dawned on me something was definately wrong and IIRC I installed Pest Patrol and Adaware. After running Spybot and getting an all clear I ran Pest Patrol and Adaware and together they found 113 problems.
After that I think relying on just one anti spy app is kinda pointless.
But each to there own.

Re: ntl Netguard

Well ZAP has it's own intergral spyware scanner which updates pretty regularly. However if I run adaware or Spybot they both pick up what ever ZAP has missed and what the other has missed. It does give one pause for thought.Indeed only once has Spybot ever said my system was clean after an Adaware scan. Odd isn't it? I guess it depends on what one programmer regards as spyware as another may not know about it.

Re: ntl Netguard

Has anyone had this problem with Netguard? For about 5-6 months my laptop (XP Home SP2) has been freezing up after irregular amounts of time, usually (but not always) when logged on to Runescape.com and left inactive. My firewall - ZoneAlarm - recently alerted me to CSS-DVP, a background virus monitor made by Command Software Systems Inc. I've now come to believe (98%) that ntl Netguard uses this CSS software. Reports on the Web indicate that CSS-DVP causes instabilities in Windows XP Home with SP2. Look in Windows\system32\drivers for CSS-DVP.sys and in Program Files\Common Files\Command Software for the rest (which I know I never knowingly installed)!
