If u look at the previous link i posted you see that most of the reports of 6600s over heating are on cards not overclked.
And by sayin they are well known for over heating does not mean that all will suffer from it.
Also u have a amd64 cpu with cool n quiet , asuming ur mobo supports it this will dramatically drop temps throughout the pc, it does this by cycling the voltages an speeds depending on the load.
heres an example of my voltages an temps with cool n quiet running.
and i to only have 2 fans.

an this is in a room with a temp of 35c.

Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
guys i tried it on my dell machine. (not sure what psu) but its about 2 year old pc. 768ram 2.8ghz etc... and the card works fine on the games i had problems with on the other pc. so can i assume that its the motherboard on the other pc causing problems?

Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
PSU was 250w (less than the 400w!!) but theres also another fan seperate above the processor. does this make it more than 250w? guess not as the PSU said 250w on it. Motherboard 99% to blame?

yes and the 9800 worked fine so why is it the motherboard? if the mobo was at fault surely it would fault whatever card was installed

Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
oh i see what you mean, but i thought cos that was ATI and this is NVIDIA or something. Maybe more powerful card etc. I dunno? Ive eliminated pretty much everything else....
Plus its weird that most games seem ok, its just a few, and it always seems to be on the intro movies / menus and then when u get into the heart of the game they seem alright. but it takes a while to get there

Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
I had a problem once with my 6600gt, it drove me nuts for ages .. and i tried various drivers both in win98 and win2K, and it didnt resolve it... My main problem was the card was stopping/freezing every second for a split second within games.. and the videos/mpg in the menus wera also doing it sometimes with corrupted graphics.. mainly nfs1.. it turned out to be my USB wireless adaptor causing the problem trying to find the other one.. try taking out usb peripherals?? maybe this may shed some light on the issue?..

Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
Zinglebarb could be right, dalboy. There are several factors to consider here: Dell are well known to use PSUs that, although labelled as low power output, produce whatever power they do very reliably. On the other hand, a lot of generic PSUs may have a label on them that has a high rating but a) this rating is often somewhat inflated and b) whatever power they do produce may not be very reliable. And even a genuinely high output PSU may not be producing enough power on the rails you need. IIRC graphics cards with auxiliary connectors are usually drawing power from the 12 volt rail, which a lot of PSUs fail to supply adequately. There's also the question of what the PSU is being called upon to drive: the Dell machine may be drawing less power than yours does.
It's usually best to go for known good brands like Antec and Enermax; PSUs from manufacturers like these will often outperform generic PSUs with apparently higher ratings.
What make of PSU are you using?
