6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)

Hi guys much appreciated if anyone can help

ive done searches but there are so many others with problems but didnt see anything same as mine

basically i have this spec machine:

Asus A7N8X-X SKT A Nforce2 AGP X8 Sound USB 2.0 Motherboard
AMD Athlon XP2600 333mhz
120gb hd
1.5gb ram
400w psu

also had a radeon 128mb pro 9800 card which was working fine but latest games starting to not keep up
so got a PNY 6600GT

ok i removed all ATI drivers and card from machine beforehand with that driver cleaner etc and add remove programs etc...

installed 6600gt ok with drivers that came with disk. think they are 7.7.7.2

played some games okish (call of duty 2 demo, medal of honor games etc..)

but tried some others like GTR FIA Racing and Heroes of the pacific and i get like white lines at the menus / some garbled text menus and everything seems to jerk. ive tried mucking about with in game graphics options and that hasnt worked and also tried the nvidia options on the toolbar which i cant find anything that will get rid of these lines / garbled text.

ive tried running that 3ddemo05 program and everything it runs (tests) seems really slow. is this right??

also when i go into the bios, going through some of the menus the options seem to be slow and flick slightly. didnt get this with the radeon. not sure what options to change in the bios if any. oh i had to change the CPU speed from 133mhz to 200mhz when i first built the pc as the ahtlon chip was showing up as 1.5ghz in windows. on 200mhz it comes up as it should. tried putting this back anyway but still same

Please help!!

thanks a bunch!!

p.s i did try updating the nvidia drivers but it sill happened so done everything from fresh and stuck with what came with the card for now (as the drivers seemed fairly recent and the games i was trying were older)

Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)

Firstly waht PSU do you have, as in make an model (all 400W are not equal). Have you had the chance to try the card in another machine? Have you had a look at BIOS update here: http://support.asus.com/download/dow...&model=A7N8X-X
Nothing GPU specific is listed but you never know, it may also solve the problem of you having to manually set the CPU FSB as there are updates for that! Do you have fast writes on and AGP set to 8x together with an aperture of 128MB? If all else fails you might like to try a complete OS reinstall with the latest nVidia drivers and see how that goes.

ok thanks for that link. i tried the latest drivers and they made games that were working ok with older drivers, worse! i.e. quake 4 and fear run okish with 7.7.7.2 drivers that came with the card but i get that white line tearing and jerking with new latest drivers

sounds like you have remains of the ati drivers on the system, try and clear it off, there are tools out there that should remove all remnants of the ati software, most people format and reinstall on such a major hardware change

Indeed; ATI do their own, very effective driver cleaner; it's called cat-uninstaller.exe and you can get it from the Utilities section of their driver pages. It's also uncluded in ATI's more recent display drivers sets (i.e. the downloads including display driver, capture driver and Control Panel/Center) - you find it as ATI - Software Uninstall Utility in Add/Remove Programs when you've installed the driver set.

Uninstall your NVidia drivers (the cat-uninstaller shouldn't remove anything from them, but best to be sure), reboot, run the file and reboot as required. Run your Driver Cleaner again, just to be sure, and make sure you remove program starting references as well as other registry entries. Then delete (if you haven't already) the ATI folder on your C: drive and any ATI folders in Program Files. Do a search in your Windows folder for ati*.* and delete the lot. Then empty the Recycle Bin and reboot.

It may also be worthwhile reinstalling your chipset drivers and your installation of DirectX. Reboot again and reinstall your NVidia drivers.

This process should remove any ATI remnants from your system (as you probably know, both ATI's and NVidia's uninstalls are woefully inadequate) and make sure that any possible damage to your chipset drivers and DirectX installation are repaired. HTH

Not being funny but do you have the power connector plugged into the graphics card?

Good point, it's a white molex plug, the sort you plug into the back of cd rom drives etc, so best check it's in firmly, if at all:tu:

Yes, it's what I would do in installing such a change of hardware:)

yep its in. i done exactly what patrickp said. booted quake up with fresh install and latest nvidia drivers from their site and its got all lines in the opening video as soon as it loads up. stuttering and everything. 7.7.7.2 drivers that came with the card work fine??!

Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)

Have you checked if there any patches for the game from the makers web site, in case there's any probs working on that card?

Just checked, nothing out there yet patch wise:(

Did you do a total reformat and reinstall first?

Daft question too, is there onboard graphics still live on your motherboard?

Press Del key as your PC starts to go into bios, check out whats what in there.

The first post struck a cord. I have just replaced a TI4200 with a 6800gt and had the same probs u have, tearing textures and blocky sections with white lines on monitor 2.
Noticed my fan speeds droppin a fraction when i refreshed the desktop or started a game. rigged up a spare psu to feed the graphics card on its own and problemo solved,
well almost. I still get flashes on monitor2 now an again but otherwise..

Best recommendations for a strong power supply?
