Replacement for an AMD K6-2 500?

Hi Guys,

Anybody got any idea what would be the fastest chip I could replace my AMD K6-2 500 with, without having to change the motherboard?

Thanks

MMMmmm - Probably a k6 III - 550mhz

Not worth doing in my opinion.

I don't supose you could tell us what motherboard you've got?

K6-2/550, or possibly a K6-3/500. check the mobo manual...

it's not really worth it!

K6 2/3 mobos are all ATX aren't they?
You could probably get a cheap 1.XGHz Duron and mobo for £30-40.

Re: Replacement for an AMD K6-2 500?

Ummmmm.....

That's not good.....

The motherboard is in my old PC which I use as a server, I just plugged it in and the PSU is making popping/arking sounds (I haven't even switched it on at the front yet.....).....

Oh sh*t.....

Re: Replacement for an AMD K6-2 500?

The older ones were AT....

The last one (board) I had with K6 series cpu on it had an AT and an ATX power connector on it.

With luck it COULD just be the psu....

Hope so dude.

edit - if it's JUST a server do you NEED more than 500mhz?

Anyway if your'e cpu has popped I may have a k6 knocking about in my spare parts drawer. (not a 500mhz one tho - more like 400)

Re: Replacement for an AMD K6-2 500?

Well..... At least I don't have to worry about replacing the processor just yet

Bugger!

Don't want to replace the PSU and then find that the mobo is fried as well..... Would rather just get a whole new tower.....

ARSE!!!

Ok, so, anybody got any idea where I can get a really cheap unit to replace the one that I have.

Must have a network card but other than that I don't care too much about the spec as long as the processor/memory are no worse than what's in this one (processor as above 256Mb memory).

I have two 80Gb Seagate Barracudas that I can take out of this one (assuming they work) and if the motherboards are compatible I can even use the memory that I have (assuming that isn't fried!).

FECK!!!

Re: Replacement for an AMD K6-2 500?

Ive a selection of k 2 or 3 anyone is welcome to ,I dunno if they work or not though, problem with messing with soc7 is you have to jumper everything, multiplier, vcore, fsb nightmare without a manual ,god I never realised how easy it became with auto clock

Ive got a duron or 2 low clock speeds again not sure if they work ,would fit a soc a board about 17 quid off ebuyer for cheapo variety

ebay?

i'd test all the parts if you can (forget the mobo and psu), though by the sounds of things a few bits and bobs went bang!

try a local independent computer shop or fair, usually good places to pick up old parts for cheap.
