This was a last minute change which took the court by surprise - they were prepared to swear in the jury and begin legal argument. The families of his victims weren’t even there because they were expecting the substantive proceedings not to get going until tomorrow.

Rudakubana will be sentenced on Thursday

His guilty pleas mean automatic reporting restrictions in relation to the anticipated trial have lifted, because there is no risk of prejudicing a jury

Reporting restrictions related to naming the child victims who survived remain

Because of the pleas, the prosecution did not open its case today

They will do that at the sentencing hearing, when the defence will also present evidence and mitigation in relation to Rudakubana's health

So Thursday is when we will get more details on the background of attack

In an official document seen by the ECHO, it is stated Rudakubana was referred to Prevent four times ahead of the day of the attack, with one coming after he was found to have researched terror attacks, namely the London Bridge attack in 2017, at a specialist high school in 2021. Prevent is a multi-agency taskforce spearheaded by Counter Terrorism Policing which works to prevent vulnerable people being drawn into criminal behaviour. However the ECHO understands three referrals were actually received by Prevent.

Southport knife attacker Axel Rudakubana is feared to have been planning Britain's first high school massacre a week before the rampage - but was talked out of going to the building by his father, it can be revealed.

Armed with a large kitchen knife, the teenager wore a green hooded sweatshirt and surgical mask as he left his home to a waiting taxi. It would be the same outfit he chose to wear when he went on his murderous rampage in Southport last July.

But his father Alphonse ran out after him and pleaded with the taxi driver not to take him on the 15-mile journey from the family home in Banks, Lancashire, to Range High School, in Formby, Merseyside.

There is no suggestion Rudakubana's father knew what he is believed to have been planning at the school, but an eyewitness said: 'There was a confrontation and Rudakubana was eventually persuaded to leave the vehicle.'

A public inquiry will be held into the Southport attacks, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has announced.

It comes after Axel Rudakubana pleaded guilty on Monday to killing Bebe King, 6, Elsie Dot Stancombe, 7, and Alice da Silva Aguiar, 9 who had been attending a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in the town.

Cooper said their families "needed answers about what had happened leading up to the attack".

She said Rudakubana had been referred to Prevent programme three times between December 2019 and May 2021 when he was aged 13 and 14, as well as having contact with the police, the courts and social services.
