Asda 'faces £100m equal pay fight' after tribunal case

I think this is great news. I thin that supermarkets pay crap wages. And yet make lots of profits.

My son used to work for Tesco. And his wages were absolute rubbish, and yet the store was making lots of dosh.

I think thay they way that supermarket's look at it is. If you don't want the job, someone will take it.

It doesn't matter where you work, or where it is. You should get the same wages. Simples

You think wrong. Their margins are tiny.

Re: Great news for staff

Men and women were getting paid the SAME amount for the SAME jobs in the SAME type of workplaces.

Quote:
The case was brought on behalf of a group of women, mainly in hourly paid jobs in stores, comparing their pay to mainly male staff in distribution depots.
If the 2 type of jobs were the same then there wouldn't be the male-female imbalances in the workforce. If the work was the same, why weren't more women working in the distribution depots?

I worked at an asda distribution depot years ago, there were plenty of women working there and the pay was pretty good but it's very different from working in a shop I'd imagine, harder and more skilled but that withstanding I've found on pretty much any issue that the view opposite of Arthur's is the correct position to adopt.

Re: Great news for staff

Prior to having the silver spoon inserted into my metropolitan elite bottom I worked for Exel on their Tesco distribution contract. Picking orders in the freezer for 2 years. At least 165 items per hour picked, packed into cages, shrink wrapped and labelled, ranging from light boxes of ice cream through to 20kg boxes of chips, all in -30c. Obviously driving an electric vehicle to carry the cages on so that I could fill them.

I've also worked in a supermarket.

One of them was significantly more challenging than the other.

This all seems bizarre.

Okay I missed this. Are you saying that all jobs should pay the same?

In that case you should move to North Korea, that system works brilliantly over there.

How about debating the topic not the person.

Seem an odd ruling.

Its not unusual for companies to pay differently at different locations.

It's not merely different locations but different work environments altogether.

Clever, the way they've stripped out all the obvious differences between a warehouse (very high shelves, fork lifts everywhere, cold, less desirable work location for nipping out for lunch, etc etc etc) and a supermarket. Employers can, and do, have to pay more to attract people to work in less desirable environments. The gender balance in the different workplaces is entirely incidental to this case and the lawyers have made another clanging great big generalisation in attempting to disguise this. If there are men and women in both locations, then it is trivially easy to establish whether Asda pays equally by comparing like with like.

No ruling appears to have been made yet. There has been no announcement of the result of the 7 day hearing earlier this year (at least none I can find).
