yeah, it costs a small fortune to keep adding channels so VM are trying to offset that by squeezing as much juice out of each one as possible. It isn't as straight forward as that though as other upgrades need to be done to facilitate the increase in modulation. The higher the modulation the less noise tolerant it is and that is why you'll see some channels drop back down to qam32 or qam16. When your connection was playing up a few years ago you could tell when there was a problem with the upstream because it would drop right down to qpsk (very slow connection but prevents you from dropping your wan connection completely).

Google QAM and have a read! To be fair it's not as much of a problem on the downstream, that's why we are currently on 256 downstream and 16/32/64 up.

Re: Virgin Media UK Confirms Trial of Faster Broadband Upload Speeds

To be totally honest with you all. I am getting really fed up with the fact that l am paying top money for TV/BB, and we are not getting it.

There is also a problem with VM putting as 'gap' where you cannot use BB too much at certain times of the day.

I have spoken with the terrible CS about this. And they always tell me , you get what you are paying for.

They can put on every top BB/Tv they can give you. But if you are not getting the service, and what you are paying for.

The CS is terrible at sorting out problems.

What do you mean by "gap"? You should get your full download speed 24/7, anything else is a fault (Not necessarily a Virgin fault, could be a limitation at your end). It could be congestion, but again that's something that should be dealt with. What are you actually seeing and what is Virgin stating?

Re: Virgin Media UK Confirms Trial of Faster Broadband Upload Speeds

Kushan., I spoke with a VM CS agent, and told them about the BB speed. I was told that VM 'limit' the BB usage at certain times of the day. Now if that isn't VM fault, then l don't know what is.

We as customers, pay a lot of money for VM services. And therefore should expect at least 90% service.

With VM you always get excuses from CS. And you ask anyone on this forum, for they think of VMCS. and l guarantee it wont be good,.

This isn't true and hasn't been true for years now. I don't know when you spoke to the agent, but traffic management on the downstream was dropped some time ago. It does still exist on the upstream (upload) but your download should be full speed on everything except the likes of P2P and newsgroups.

Call them again, you got a **** agent who was incapable of doing his job.

Not getting full speed 24x7 is not a fault, Kushan. Some visible contention at peak times is normal.

Basically every post you've made in the VM section is to complain about the service itself, the customer service or the pricing, although you did mention a while ago that you're getting a discount.

Sport, specifically football, is the major reason your service is so expensive. Your gratitude for that should be aimed at Sky and BT. They're the one paying enormous amounts to not show the UK very much of it. VM actively campaign against the high costs of football in the UK, and point out how poor the coverage is in terms of games shown versus games played.

You think customer service are idiots, that VM disable your TV and broadband for fun, and that VM, your words, con you, treat you like a mug and 'dictate what you watch'.

I have no idea why anyone would continue to take a service they think is so overpriced and poor from a company they dislike dealing with so much. Life is too short to spend it moaning.

I've not worded it brilliantly, what I mean is they aim to give you your full speed 24/7 and don't deliberately limit it, as the agent apparently claimed. You are right to say that congestion will happen at peak times occasionally, but there is a point when it's too much congestion and gets raised as an issue to be fixed (however long that takes), which I class as a "fault" because it's a fault ticket, but perhaps fault isn't the correct term.

Either way, if congestion is getting so bad it's impacting your service (i.e. you're struggling to stream stuff or play a game), then yeah Virgin needs to sort it. If your 200mbit is only getting 180Mbit at 8pm, well suck it up.

Easier said than done. I am on 200mb, upgraded last year. From day one were never getting the speeds (circa 100mb since upgrading). Was told an upgrade was imminent in the area as in an over utilised area. It was then put back to December 2015, then May 2016 (this week) and now it is September 2016. The began crediting our bill with £12.50 off each month due to the service we were getting. However for the last fortnight between 5pm-midnight and most of the weekend we have been getting speeds less than 10mb. Most evenings its anywhere between 0.2 and 2mb. Yes you read that correctly. speeds increase at other times during of fpeak hours of course but when you need to use it you are left high and dry. They have this week increased the monthly credit to £20 but have warned that the September date is not set in stone and so could slip again. Bit of a nightmare really!

Yeah, I'm not trying to imply that it's easy or trivial for Virgin to fix, but none the less it still needs sorting.
