Virgin Media UK Confirms Trial of Faster Broadband Upload Speeds

Quote:

Over the past few weeks a number of customers have conducted speedtests on their Virgin Media connections and noted that their upstream speeds have risen several Megabits above the normal level, which appeared to reflect a 10:1 ratio of download to upload performance (e.g. 200Mbps subscribers might get closer to an upload speed of 20Mbps instead of 12Mbps). Virgin has now confirmed to us that they are indeed testing faster upload speeds for a possible future upgrade.

At long last. I am on 100Mbps so I welcome the upgrade from 6 to 10Mbps... Hope this comes true soon.

I saw someone post a 200/20 speed test on the VM forum last week, but it was deleted.

I really hope this goes beyond a trial sooner rather than later.

Will 300 get 30?

I noticed this a few times recently, then it reverted back to normal, waiting for it to stick now .......

Sky have been advertising online comparing their upload speeds to VM's so this is timely.

Very, very welcome news. Any increase is better than none at all and upload is where VM are falling behind.

You're getting cynical in your old age. It will be like those ads where the guys face gets contorted by the speed..... well, maybe not.

At your age my desires were somewhat more base but to each their own.

Well there you have it.

Anyway, a welcome boost but there's other metrics that VM have less control over that are also areas where DOCSIS 3 can't quite match up to FTTC. The jitter (lack there-of) and consistently low pings are the one major thing I do miss from early cable and my Sky FTTC.

That said, I'm no longer the avid FPS gamer I once was, so realistically it matters little to me nowadays.

It mentions at the end "so we could be waiting a little while longer for an official roll-out (assuming it will happen)." So dose that mean it might not come?

Sure that depends on how well the trial goes. It's going to be a case of assessing impact, working out the cost of rolling it out network wide (and there will be a cost as some areas will need upgrades to cope), then balancing that cost over the expected gain in the market.

Personally, I am excited about the prospect of 10:1 uploads but I can't help but wonder if others would be better off if they reduced STM instead.
