Short of professional wireless surveyors, there's nothing any ISP can do for you that you can't do yourself in 5 minutes, and have probably tried already.

Have you tried wired connections? IF you're getting slow speeds wired, then Virgin can take a deeper look at it but if the problem is wireless, then no other ISP is going to be able to do anything as it's beyond their control. The most they'll do is fiddle with your wireless channel settings.

On that note, don't leave it on "auto", manually test the channels yourself. There's a good chance that there's just a lot of wireless interference nearby - which can be caused by a lot of stuff, not just other wireless networks (which means it won't show up on any wifi analysis app and means any "auto" configuration won't be able to detect it either). You only need to test 3 channels on 2.4Ghz - 1, 6 and 11, don't bother testing the rest. See if one is significantly better than the others.

Same for the 5Ghz, try the different channels and see what difference you get. However, only do any of this after you've tested wired.

Good idea. I'll test wired speeds on both superhub mode and modem mode and post results later.

FINALLY, someone gets it.

But then you don't listen to yourself

Most non-wifi sources of interference won't be nicely aligned on 20Mhz 1-6-11 boundaries.

No, but unless he sees a significant difference between say 1 and 11, there's almost no point in checking the rest

Re: Can't access GUI

So, Checking a wired connection between a PC and the router gives a nice 160Mb connection. More than what I pay for. Fantastic.

This I guess, confirms all suspicions that it is my gaff / other interference that is to blame for poor wireless?

Channel 6 works best by the way. About 8Mb/s faster than 1 or 11. So I left it on that. I'm now getting about 38Mbs. Whilst I'm happy with that for browsing, it's still disappointing that it seems this is the maximum wireless speed in the house.

Feel free to experiment with channels around 6, then. However you are right, whatever the issue is, it's not Virgin's domain to fix and you'll have the same problem with other ISP's. There are plenty of other options you can fiddle with on the router, such as channel width and that kind of thing.

What about 5Ghz? Have you tried checking those channels for variance?

You might want to have a look at https://play.google.com/store/apps/d....wifi.analyzer (if you have an android phone) - give you an idea of what's going on around you. Not sure how accurate it is but might give an indication.

Re: Can't access GUI

Is there any cheap way of detecting other radio interference? I am thinking especially of cordless phones and wireless keyboards and mice?

Use an AM/MW radio tuned to 612Khz although this is mainly used to find sources of REIN or SHINE.

Re: Can't access GUI

I wouldn't bother trying to buy specialised equipment to detect interference. Ultimately, it makes no difference, all you can do is change wireless channels and test until you get the best result you can.

If you detect interference, great - but you probably can't do **** about it, so you're still going to have to just change channels until you find one that works best.

Re: Can't access GUI

I use Wifi analyzer to tell me which channels others are using in your area, although a certain member he will say otherwise. But this does work.

I've used it to help family and friends wifi issues.

It works, but it will only show you other wireless networks. The 2.4ghz spectrum is unlicensed, which means all kinds of things use it - Bluetooth, Baby monitors, some home automation systems, hell even some Microwaves produce interference in this frequence range - and none of that will show up. Don't get me wrong, it's a great app and I use it myself, but it is not the be-all and end-all, you're still better off checking different channels all the same.
