If they just kept the regional versions in standard definition, but switched to them on the hd channel why would the transmission costs be any different? They're already being broadcast. I can understand it would cost to start transmitting them in hd, I'm just not sure that's really wanted.

Genuine question.

People should leave the BBC alone it's cheaper than Sky and ITV use advertising to pay for there content with adverts every 15 mins. If the BBC loses the license fee and will have to use advertising which would be taken a way from other channels causing them to close so less choice so stop moaning and enjoy before its gone

If the BBC were to do this, they'd still need to broadcast multiple copies of the HD channel, as well as the existing multiple SD channels. This is what costs.

I suppose in theory the STB could do the switching at the appropriate times by retuning to the local SD channel (in a similar way to how the STB retunes to the off-air slate on the part-time channels), but that would require substantial software and system development by VM.

Looking forward to SSNHQ and SN arriving in HD in Jan and hopefully 2015 will bring us more than just the (ridiculously high!) Feb price rise.

Thanks for the answer. Obviously it's not for Virgin or Sky etc to do the switching for the BBC.

I won't risk going off topic by wishing everyone a merry Christmas

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 4

Do we have any potential launches in January other than the two sky hd channels? I'm trying to think what we are really missing out on. Other than the channel which must not be named *cough* Atlantic

Part of thinks it may come soon. This is not based on any evidence other than sky have had it exclusive for a while, the impact of it is dwindling, they need additional advertising funds to add to the coffers for EPL bid, now tv has taken off for people who wanted Atlantic that way, a few people get sky tv for Christmas so announcing it coming to VM in January after that's all died down makes sense. Plus it would make sense as to why sky sports news and sky news hd were kept back till new year

Keep the contract secret, wait till the Christmas now tv and sky subscriptions have died down and then in January you can have the lot... Would make sense for the price increase?

Fantasy? A nonsense theory? Who knows! I'm sure the adventure we will embark on next year on here will be wild enough ..

Makes me wonder what will happen when the BBC launches BBC1+1 to replace BBC3 next year. Are they going to put a loop into each regional centre to delay local output by an hour? ITV have shied away from doing this due to costs in some areas.

Afraid to dash your hopes- it will be BBC London in England, feeding all the English regions.
Even with stb switching which was looked into for satellite, this is not possible, they will still need multiple transmission feeds from the English regions. It would be the same cost to switch a few times a day.

The difference is I can CHOOSE which brand of soap powder I buy i.e. one that doesn`t advertise and hence is cheaper. I can`t choose not to buy a tv licence or shop around for a cheaper one,can I?

This argument that if the BBC took adverts it would take advertising revenue away from other commercial stations is `old hat` and just isn`t true. The beeb said this long before there was multi commercial channels but now they`re here I see ITV are still around and doing okay. So are the others. Why can`t the beeb be partly funded by adverts and as a subscription channel anyway? Like sky 1,Watch,Alibi etc.

And where does all this anti BBC rubbish come from apart from other TV stations? Oh yes The Sun, Times Sunday Times Daily Mail, Daily Express and what do they have in common?- yes all have investments in TV stations, hardly unbiased commentators.
