Windows 7 Update Problems

This morning my laptop has applied the latest Windows 7 updates and on reboot Avast appears to have quarantined 9 Windows files.

I've Googled and found the following:

http://www.zdnet.com/microsoft-reiss...te-7000033049/

Anyone else having problems?

Thanks for the reply.

I did wonder if maybe Avast had alerted on false positives as it seems to have gained a reputation for doing that lately.

Anyone advise the best way to check for false positives?

Thanks again for your reply.

I've found that Avast suggest that if you suspect False Positives that you can get them checked at VirusTotal so I'm in the process of submitting the 9 files at the moment. If they are False Positives then I'll report them to Avast.

I used to have Avast Pro but about 2 years ago they went through a few weeks of problems where they were finding false positives everywhere and it was all on their forums about it.

I think i reinstalled Paint Shop Pro 4 or 5 times because it kept deleting the program file.

Thanks for the reply. Not sure that would have helped in this case as Avast quarantined the files after the reboot following installation of the updates as stated.

This is the first time I've hit a problem with Avast which I've used since ditching AVG when it damaged the OS by stripping out false positives!

But maybe the time has come to change again!

Re: Windows 7 Update Problems

I have had no problems with Kaspersky with the aformentioned updates.

I Know AVAST is a ram hungry program but it should strip out things without notifying you first, I think you can instruct the program to ask you every time there is a detection before applying any actions automatically.

Re: Windows 7 Update Problems

Not sure if this has anything to do with recent updates but windows is telling me that Avast isn't running but Avast is telling me it is running normally. There's an important message flagged up on the bottom right of the screen which advises me to turn on Avast but when I click on it a box appears which asks if I trust the Avast software and want to run it. Clicking on this does nothing however.

Re: Windows 7 Update Problems

Hi Osem,

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Avast again to see if this cures your problem.

Upload the file here to be tested by a raft of popular AV apps.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled Avast but W7 is still telling me I have no AV on this machine. Weird.

I also notice a rather odd message on the bottom right of the screen just about the systray - something along the lines of: "Windows 7 build ????. This copy of Windows is not genuine". It wasn't displayed in a window, just plain text on the desktop, hardly noticeable. It disappeared when I restarted the machine.
