I am so glad you said that because I was thinking about this the other day. I have always been on the highest tier available and over the years that has been;

512k, 1mbit, 1.5mbits, 3mbits, 10mbits, 20, 50, 100, 120 and now 152.

Now this is the interesting bit: When I was on 56k it would take me nearly a day to download an episode of something in SD. I got my BB and thought downloading at 70k/sec was amazing and it only took 1hr 30 mins (ish) to download the same file, then that got doubled and I was down to 45 mins for an episode so I was pretty much in real time, then it increased slighty again, then I was at 3mbits and down to 22 mins and it went on from there obviously to 10mins, 5mins, 1 minute something.
If I were to download 3 or 4 eps of something in SD on my current connection, as soon as I have clicked the links for 3 eps and ok'd them, the first download already finished, it is that fast.

Unless I was downloading a tonne of stuff then I don't need everything to finish in 10 seconds but you look at some 1080p encodings of current series and they are 4.5gb. 152mbits still might be considered disproportionately fast but I like getting downloads done and out the way so I know they are there for when I need them and I don't have to keep coming back to make sure it is still ticking along ok and hasn't dropped to 50k/sec and is going to take another day to download.

I bought a new pc a couple of weeks ago and one of the first things that popped up when I turned it on was the nvidia control panel telling me I needed to download the latest driver. Guess how big it is? 275Mb. The driver for my soundcard is 88mb, the logitech drivers for my mouse are 60mb, the software for one of my nas server is 190mb and so on. I don't want to be sitting here thinking "oh it is ok, I'll wait 2 hours for all of this download". I want it done asap so I can move on to installing other stuff and configuring stuff and the sooner I can get it all done the better.

My connection sits here idle for most of the time but I would rather pay for a super fast connection so the juice is there when I need it rather than contribute to network congestion and having it in use most of time at a slower speed.

Good points, General. Don't forget, you're also just a single user. We've long gone past the days where one person would be using "the computer" at a time and we all had to share - quite common just 10 years ago.

Now pretty much everyone in the house has their own device, always connected all the time. It adds up remarkably quickly.

ya, there is always something around I'll use it for. 200mbits sounds like a lot and if you are on a lower tier it would be. The jump for me going from 50mbits to 100mbits was nice, especially on the upstream, but since the upgrades I have had have only been marginal improvements. 200mbits will be nice but a bigger jump to 250mbits would be sweeeet.

Either way, I am not getting confused, I was just trying to make the point that even with the 3.1 gateways and infrastructure available, one of the bonuses of providing customers with 3.1 equipment will be that it will be able to support more channels simply because it is newer hardware and more recent and will thus be able to cater for the new higher speed tiers coming out.

I think people seem to be forgetting DOCSIS 3.1 doesn't actually use "channels" at least not in the traditional sense of how they have been used up to now. It's all OFDM subcarriers from here on out (which is a good thing BTW).

If you want to talk DOCSIS 3.1 you ought to get the idea of "channels" out of your head and think more like LTE

That'd be no surprise. The SoC and the wireless chip in the Superhub 1 were not only el-cheapo'd to hell but both obsoleted before the device even came out.

Yeah but that doesn't necessarily mean that Virgin will push 16 channels. I think the rumour was 12 this year?

Still a nice little jump that should support 200Mbit easily.

Interesting, that sounds like a much bigger change than the .1 would lead you to believe.

Would it not have been more appropriate with increased likelihood of a response to ask the question on the VM site?
If you can actually access the board then why not post the question there and if you can't access it then flag it to a VM Mod?
