Quick question should I enable the SH2 firewall, or just go with Windows 7 firewall?

As mon General advises, have nothing whatever to do with the SH2 firewall. Don't get me wrong - it's not buggy or anything like tht; it just consumes SH2 CPU resources which is what you don't need.

But, of course, you need a firewall on your PC(s).

Cheers guys. Disabled it and using Windows 7 firewall.

Interesting speedtest for 60MB.

Second test seems about right.

I want to try and plug the modem in downstairs, so the Xbox can route straight into it, then patch into my devolo 500 mps home plugs upstairs into my n65u upstairs which will do the wireless for iPad etc, my home office will then still talk to each other via the gigabit connections on my n65u, the printer will still be networked in via the USB port and if I require hopefully I will still get my 100mb download speed, but more importantly my Xbox downstairs will be straight in to the modem hopefully to reduce as much lag as possible.
Might not make a bit of difference.

What resources? Why disable it, when it causes no problems? He can have the windows firewall running as well giving double line of defence. The SHUB 2 is not as underpowered as you guys are making out.

SHUB 1 of course was a total disaster.

I doubt it'll make much difference (I'm sure someone will disagree) but it never hurts to have additional wireless networks - on a different channel of course. Blanket the whole house!

CPU cycles. Running a firewall behind a firewall can (and often does) cause problems. Two real life walls are a double line of defence, but two software firewalls isn't the same analogy and can actually cause more problems without adding security. To be honest anyone running a router (i.e. not modem-only mode) doesn't need a software firewall at all. Any router provides a hardware firewall because you're sat behind NAT, even with the additional software firewall turned off. You could plug into the SH2 (or any other router), disable its firewall, disable your own PC firewall, and you'd be safe.

Most people like to run both (hardware firewall and a software firewall) but the fact is it's redundancy. I run hardware NAT and my machines have iptables (Linux firewall), but it's not necessary. I agree with the above, disable the software firewall and free up cycles for DOCSIS and routing.

I am on the Premiere collection, can I get a superhub 2 to replace my existing set up, we are having a few issues with wi fi reception in the house

You can try. The first thing they'll do is to try and charge you £50.

You will say that the SH1 is not fit for purpose and the must send yoi a SH2. They MIGHT say, OK then, £20. If you're satisfied with that, fine. if not, ask to be put through to Retentions - tell them there's no point having a service that can't be used properly especially when the SH1 was advertised as the dog's gollox. They'll offer you a SH2 for £5 postage. Job done.
