Like Seph I have the 56U, didn't bother updating the software just left it to work straight out of the box! (O'k I did have to set it up to suit my requirements)

Yes - I didn't update the firmware either because it required a whole rigmarole to get to their new standard. Far too much bother. However, the 66 is already in new format firmware.

I get about 80mbit out of a rt-n16 on a very congested 2.4ghz, something is defenitly up for the OP.

My phone which seems can only do single channel (rated 72mbps) on wireless N gets about 33mbit.

I looked at a asus rt-ac66u looks extremely tempting but then sense hit as I got no ac devices (except a dongle), and anything I have that needs to be faster than wireless speeds gets a gigabit ethernet cable.

Right, nobody's suggested this but I think it's the best, sure-fire way to fix any settings issues that may be the cause: Factory reset the router.

Pinhole reset it so that everything goes back to defaults, then see what speeds you get. IF you're still having issues, contact Asus who will replace the router as it's clearly faulty (Many of us have the same or similar router and have zero issues).

And yes, before anyone gives me grief of "factory reset being the typical virgin response", in this instance it really is the best response. Asking the OP to buy another router is preposterous.

There's always the possibility that the OP has upset a flaky patch lead so it might be worth checking/swapping the cabling.

Yep, but only if he is using a different lead than the one on his Dlink. He gets better speeds with his Dlink.

CAT 5e cable is not always what it seems.

There could be any number of reasons why twisted pair doesn't perform as it should, even if you bend the stuff at an odd angle perhaps because a device is in a different place there could be an issue with the termination or one of the pair members breaking down. It always helps to rule out the obvious first.

I understand that. Best thing is to try what has already been suggested. Try another ethernet cable, rest the router by holding the rest button or return it and get another.
