There is a small plastic spanner thing included. Is this some marketing gimmick that I can throw away, or will it serve some purpose to the person installing it if I decide to go ahead?

Most of the things that could be fixed with a Firmware update have been resolved, however it still has some bugs. Obviously the things that are down to hardware like Wi-Fi signal strength remain a problem.
Not sure what they would be marketing by giving away a plastic spanner? The purpose of it it to tighten the coax cable into the back of the superhub.

Re: superhub 2
In modem mode the SH1 it is pretty well faultless.
The plastic spanner is supposed to be used to tighten up the coax cable.

Thanks for all your help.
I once had a toothbrush sent to me by my bank as a marketing gimmick!

Then, the later you leave it to upgrade, the more likely it will be that you receive a SH2 rather than that wretched SH1.
BTW, both SHs run best in modem mode with a separate router attached.

Come to that conclusion myself. I'm sticking with my NTL250 which gives a rock solid 20MB and has become more reliable than ever. A mate across town struggles to get 10MB with his Superdud.

Re: superhub 2
Fair enough. Best to be safe. But someone across town will be on a different CMTS and may face totally different load conditions. If you do ever need to compare, it has to be with a street neighbour.

Re: superhub 2
Received my Superhub. Old version unfortunately, but I just stuck it into modem mode, so no problems.
At least I'm getting the full 20MB now, which my old NTL150 modem never did.

Re: superhub 2
Currently using a VMNG300 and Apple Airport Extreme on 100mb with 120mb upgrade due next month. Will I need a SH to fully exploit the 120 upgrade if it uses channel bonding?

Re: superhub 2
Since you'd be going into modem mode on the SH, you need have no worries about how the SH1 or SH2 will perform.
Note that I run an Airport Extreme on the SH, previously SH1 now SH2. Modem mode is both devices, IMO.

Re: superhub 2
From what I have read, people seem to be using the Superhub as a modem only and not as a wifi router.
What are the advantages of doing this?
Would I be better off leaving things as they are? ( I use my own Linkseys wifi router and a VM modem that I've had for about five years. It can only go up to 20, but that's all that I have after the speed upgrade anyway).

Ok that's good to hear, I have had no issues with the VMNG300 and will be sorry to see it go.

My advice is if it ain't broke don't fix it.
That said, I assure you that modem mode on the SH is a robust solution for when your current cable modem breaks down.

Re: superhub 2
Likewise a good shout Seph.
I had the Ambit 256 running a sweet 20Mb 24/7, only got the SHub as I wanted to download files a bit quicker.Using the 60Mb service - (Went from 1.12Mb to 3.0Mb with the SHub upload)

You don't have to get rid of it, it will support 120meg speeds. The SH's only advantage is in areas where there is a lot of utilization as it can spread the downstream over twice as many channels. So keep a hold of it unless you run into issues.

Can you turn the lights off or do we still need to cover them with black tape?

You can't turn them off, i don't use my SH2 in the bedroom when i sleep, however when i turn the lights in the living room off the leds on the hub don't seem bright at all when the brightness is set to low.
