I can't say I disagree with you there, most routers should be capable of that. I don't think the SH2 (or SH3 or SH4) will ever be an all-singing, all-dancing piece of kit though. I think there will always be a need for a standalone router for many of us and there will always be someone to state that the SH should be capable of something that it's not.

I'm still on the old NTL modem. If I request a SH now, will I get version 2?

I think it depends on what speed you are on. Some of the techs on here may be able to answer but I think its for 60 and above initially

Re: superhub 2
There'[s another thing to consider. If you're on the 20 meg package and getting the full 20 meg then you may well be on the legacy network which is usually under-utilised.
If you know anybody in your street who has a Superhub, see what performance they get in relation to their up to speed. If it's poor, you're better of staying on your old tariff - if VM will let you. Then, the later you leave it to upgrade, the more likely it will be that you receive a SH2 rather than that wretched SH1.
BTW, both SHs run best in modem mode with a separate router attached.

Re: superhub 2
When will they be rolling out the SH2? I have an SH 1 but want better Wifi performance, should I splash out on a decent router now or wait? I'd rather not spend money if I don't have too.

Re: superhub 2
As a SH2 triallist, I can confirm that SH2 wireless is better than SH1. I'm still in router mode so that I can monitor stability (mine's 100%). I'll be going back to modem mode because I simply don't believe that such a cheap device can handle serious stuff simultaneously. In router mode if things go wrong for any reason, you'll be suspecting the SH2. In modem mode, anything going wrong is usually down to the circuit.
So although you don't have to, sheer peace of mind might offer a good reason to buy a decent router (which will also stand you in good stead if you ever switch to Infinity).
EDIT: As to availability, if you're on 60 meg and above and you sign up for another 12 months, people have reported that you can get a SH2 if you ask. I can't confirm that, obviously. The official position as I understand matters is that there are UK areas where there is a public rollout trial. The gossip is that the SH2 is turning up all over the place. A more definite answer than this can only come from a VM person.

If you want reliability and good wifi it's a "no brainer". Get your own router and stick the SH (1 or 2) in modem mode.
I've always said ISP's should only supply a modem and leave the user to supply their own router of their choice.
As an aside whichever router you buy will also be good for a BT or Sky fibre (FTTC) connection should you ever leave VM.

That's nice to know, at some point in the future I might at some point ask them for the SH2 as I'm on the 100Mbps package.

The SH2 is now being used nationally. But this doesn't necessarily mean you are guaranteed to get one.
My parents had their Ambit 255 swapped out last week for the speed doubling (they were on XL20), and got a SH2 without asking.
