I'm also looking to get content off my Tivo, but I'm specifically wanting to get an HD recording off the thing and keep it in HD.

Any options? I haven't got a blue ray recorder and don't really want one but would appreciate knowing if this is an option. I would be willing to invest in an HD USB capture device if one exists - if it does a tried and tested make/model would be much appreciated.

Failing that, if someone in the know could indicate if there is some way, by whatever means, of grabbing the file off the Tivo HD in decrypted form, I will follow it up and hopefully find out how to do it. Obviously don't break any cable forum T&Cs in your reply.

As someone has already said, there is absolutely no issue regarding copyright infringement here because I can already play any of my recordings on my Tivo and record them directly on to a DVD. It's just that I want the HD quality rather than the SD quality.

yeah you can record form eyetv, but the quailty is **** compared to the acutally stream that is broadcast to yoru tv, and that is what you download it be the highest quailty possiable so in there eyes you can use it for fraudently things

trust me you might not believe it but i believe the system should be open more, you should be able to put your recording onto any device etc and have no drm but the idiot at the top of these companeis are living in the 70s and think the itnernet doesnt exist well shouldnt because they cant control you, there ways round it, but i ont detail them you need to look up on the internet

tell that to the idiot at the top of thecompanies and defend there copyright, there no way to get it off just forget about it if you cant buy it find the studio it ade it and peter them to releae it on blu-ray

it wont be the same file, when copyign to dvd it doesnt copy as the original it encodes it and make the quailty less, then when you go to rip it form teh dvd the quailty is less again, they see it as the quailty been less means the copy wont be worth it, dnt ask me why they just do, to be honest with the right tools you can copy the version on the dvd to hard drive and make it appear tv quailty so i dnt know why they dnt block that now, oh using a capture card is techincally illegal to in fact so it using dvd recorder but they have hard job getting them not be sold as the comapneis makign them woudl fit them vigiously

OK fair enough for the DVD method, but it would be nearly impossible to tell the difference using the HD capture device in my link above. For all practical purposes it will be the same file.

So has anyone used one or similar that they can recommend? Someone must be copying HD content off their V+ / Tivo one way or another, surely?

OK, after much googling I think I've got it. The highest quality solution would be Tivo to HDFury3 to Hauppauge HD PVR which will give me HD up to 1080i with Dolby 5.1 sound. Not cheap though at around Â£380!

there still quailty lose because ever process to encode reduce he quailty from teh original ts file which is what oyu would download, but yes that method will work probally give the best option but i wont say how it done

There is no copyright problem with downscaled SD copies of HD programmes, but recording to a blu-ray in HD creates a lossless copy, and this is particularly what the Hollywood studios don't like. This is why there are no HDMI inputs on the new blu-ray recorders and HDCP introduced to 'prevent' copying.

And BSD is not Linux. If you're going to try to be smart at least get your facts right. Mach/BSD and Linux are completely separate implementations of UNIX.

and how many people really know about unix and it subsytem??? linux is know cause of android so for a novice it easier to equate to and linux all variations and unix all variaiton are in underlying way they work are the same, it just i suppose oyu coudl say it like windows and different version have different way of workign form commadn etc but yes im aware what your saying but do oyu want me to bore or confuss someoen who really doesnt know?

It is a copyright issue, but the copyright owners appear willing to accept copying to SD as that does lower the quality of the copy (and therefore any copies ripped from it).

Also, the fact that these devices are on sale does not make it legal to use them for copying. You can buy knives legally. Doesn't make stabbing someone with a knife legal.

Or are you talking about grabbing the HD content and distributing it? In which case, yes it's definitely illegal. In my case I want to grab the hi-def MOTD highlights of United beating Man U, and I only want to keep it for myself, so there will be no infringement in this respect because I will delete the copy on my Tivo to free up space once I've copied it to my NAS box. I doubt it is something that will ever be released on a Blu-Ray so other than resorting to illegally downloading a torrent, I believe the HDFury/HD PVR combination is currently my only legal (but very expensive) option.

"accessible" is the key word here (see section 31A). It is in relation to making copies for the visually impaired. For example, if you bought a book but the print was too small for you to read, you would be permitted to make a copy with larger print if a large-print version wasn't commercially available.

I'm not going to enquire into your personal circumstances, but I can't think of any way that having a DVD copy would let you access a recording that you couldn't access on the TiVo.

In general, the only lawful copies you can make in a domestic environment are for time-shifting purposes. Your TiVo already meets that requirement.
