Village in uproar as Belgian war memorial relocated
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-12914070
Quote:
Residents of a Belgian village are furious after their mayor ordered the removal of a Royal Air Force war memorial, honouring British troops.
The monument in Doel, on the River Schelde near Antwerp, was taken away in the early hours of Monday and its plinth was destroyed by workmen.
It had stood on the site since 1948 in memory of those who manned defences against German air raids in WWII.

Nice to think that there are still those in Belgium who would be annoyed about this issue.

Well refusing to tell anyone where the monument actually is probably isn't the best policy, unless of course it's in a million pieces somewhere hastily being restored....

Re: Village in uproar as Belgian war memorial relocated
My parents have travelled all over northern europe and there are loads of memorials & graves to WWII and every one is maintained by the locals in their own time and using their money. They are immaculate.

Yes, thankfully it's a tradition that persists and makes even more bitter the actions of some of our very own 'citizens' who feel it's OK to deface or otherwise disrespect these monuments to the fallen.
