That isn't strictly true about the BBC but they are certainly being cautious regarding 3D.
The final stages of Wimbledon will be covered in 3D in partnership with Sony (which is similar to Sky, it seems the TV manufacturers are pouring the real money into 3D, the broadcasters including the likes of Canal+ are not really seriously being exposed financially), obviously the BBC don't have a TV platform to provide this in the UK but it will be made available worldwide and will be available here at other outlets like cinemas and private closed circuits.
They are not satisfied that the current technologies will become the de facto standard so seem to be keeping all their options open which seems wise. And let's face it even Sky (with their solitary 3D channel and endless repeats) are not exactly going bust with 3D as there simply isn't the content to support it. It's HD which appears to be driving subs for them and VM and I think that will be the case for quite some time yet.

WWE Tough Enough coming to Sky1 on Saturdays?
Look like BSkyB only got the rights to WWE Tough Enough due to WWE Superstars being given an axe by WGN America with the final airing of 'WWE Superstars' on WGN on Thursday, April 7 and will air on Sky1 on Saturday April 9th.

Yes it's a standards issue, there will be no investment until mid 2012 when they will be reviewing their position. As they point out the 3D "revolution" is being pushed by the big movie studios and TV manufactures and not generally by the audience. I think the BBC have got it spot on here.

Good idea to hold back, I've just ordered a new Sony LED TV and I didn't go for the 3D model, not worth the extra £500 imo.
I Won't get a 3D TV till you don't have to wear the glasses...

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. I.
I find it odd that people complain about VM not having all the channels that Sky have but when one gets released they ridicule it for not being a channel they watch. Well guess what, people watch Colors TV, A LOT of people watch it (Unlike Sky Atlantic ).
