The Amazon Kindle Thread

First time in the Kindle thread so please don't shoot me!

I've got a load of PDFs on my PC - can I put them on a Kindle if I where to buy one?

Do they have to go through some conversion process to get them on there or does it support native PDF?

And how would I get them on there?

You can view PDFs on a Kindle but it just too much hassle really. But you can use calibre to convert (text) PDFs to .Mobi format, so if you have say a paperback in PDF, then it won't be a problem.

To get them on there, it's just a case of drag and drop.

No, but it's a freeware app you can download. Very handy, it'll convert most formats to the kindle format, very easy to use as well.

If you want to try it out, you can install Calibre and install the Kindle reader for the PC, then give it try, convert a PDF using it, then view it in the kindle reader and see how it looks. Also good to learn how to get the best out of Calibre without porting them over to the actual Kindle.

Too much hassle? I just email the pdf to the Kindle account and it pops up on the next sync. You can't change the font size on a pdf - just alter the zoom - but apart from that it's straighforward.

Lee, a cool feature of Calibre is you can email imported files straight to your Kindle - no messing with USB cables.

Great piece of freeware IMO.

Hassle as in reading the actual pdfs, not a hassle in getting them on the actual Kindle itself.

I read that there was a charge for that - some email address like *****@free.kindle.com - think this went through some Amazon conversion system hence the charge.

If you have the 3G version, you send the docs to free.kindle.com and they are sent via WiFi. If you don't have 3G then it doesn't matter which address you use.

Send the e-mail to your Kindle e-mail address for wireless delivery directly to your Kindle; If your Kindle has Wi-Fi enabled, it will be delivered to your Kindle at no charge. A small fee will be charged for the wireless delivery over 3G.

Don't see much point in buying a 3G version anyway...

It may have been mentioned before but the point of having a 3G , at least fir me, means acces to the web, emails etc anywhere in the world anytime for free ( it is in black and white and it is slow but it is free.
I tried it in alexandria airport 2 months ago).

Well....bitten the bullet and got one from Tesco this evening....it's on charge at the moment.

3g or not 3g, that ....is the question? whether it is cheaper in the pocket to suffer the shillings and a rows of outrageous fortune
