NTL allowed AOL access to their cable network a while back.

True - I used to have this. However, unless I am wrong, did NTL place speed restrictions on them ? - I could only get a max of 1mb broadband with AOL - but at the time, I think 5mb was the max NTL customers could have

I don't recall that but you may well be right. It does demonstrate that parts of the cable network hasn't always been a closed shop though.
BT has been privatised for around 25 years so I think there should come a time when they are treated like any other private company, maybe now is a bit soon though.

VDSL will be exclusive to BT. Sky will only have the old copper wire network. Ok for now, but will not be fit for 2012.

It didn't work very well for NTL at the time and I'm sure it's still the same. VM would make very little money out of wholesale deals. They have their pricing very low as it is.
They would still be responsible for the network, but without any real profit. It wouldn't be good for competition as it would lead to the downfall of the cable network. IMO.

I think that might just slightly be over egging it myself!
In time I would welcome VM to be forced to allow competitors access to their network, maybe once they have finally haulled themselves out of debt.

No might about it, it will be donkeys years yet but I wouldn't impose any restrictions on them until that point even though the debt is their own previous management's fault.

Media Boy ask for your views.
Let me know what you think about Sky Atlantic launching on Virgin Media in 2011 on the ''Sky Atlantic on Virgin Media'' thread.

The debt isn't anyones "fault". It's a purely business decision.
Debt isn't bad, in fact I'd argue it's vital to the well running of any company. You can often gain a far greater return on cash at hand than you're having to pay in debt interest, so why would you pay down debt if doing so will make you less money? (Not to mention that having debt allows you to avoid all sorts of taxes).

No debt can be seen as a good thing, the money you pay on interest could be better spent elsewhere!

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010) Vol. IV
But if you didn't have the cash to invest in the infrastructure (which enables you to get more customers, which in turn increases your cash-flow), the only way is debt.
It's how nearly everyone buys a house - they don't wait until they have saved all the money up.
