There is protesting then there is this. Note there is bad language in this so turn down the sound before watching if you are easily offended.
Also note this was BEFORE the kettling started.

So what do you think they should do to try and stop the hooligans doing what is in this video. ????? or do you think these people are correct and everyone else is wrong http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InjVp...layer_embedded

If it's used in Northern Ireland then as per the Raoul Moat X-Rep taser debacle i would imagine that it is down to the individual force to justify.
If it were 100% illegal then why did the met up till a few years ago have a couple in storage?

It would been easier to put the whole thing into context. They didn't need a water cannon really did they.
I don't understand your point about right or wrong. I have never defended unnecessary violent protest. I don't believe that I have ever written that I do.

Maybe they should have started this during the period of the last Government? I was beginning to think that people in the UK were asleep!

So when the Home Secratary said:
Quote:
"As I speak water cannon has yet to be approved as a piece of equipment," she said.
"It requires legal and democratic oversight."
|
When did she really mean?

No they are not illegal ,nobody has said they are illegal

In the UK water cannon has only been deployed in Northern Ireland, at various points throughout the Troubles, and its use has been resisted until now by senior police officers elsewhere in Britain.
|
Quote:
“It is a matter for them to decide which tactics they wish to use. They (the police) will look across the board at the powers that are available to them, at the operational things that they can do and make decisions to ensure any future demonstrations that take place are also policed robustly.”

As quoted in many articles today the police have the choice if they want to use them they would not needa change in the law

Re: Students Rioting in London.

A disabled protester is to lodge a complaint against the Metropolitan Police, claiming he was twice dragged out of his wheelchair by riot officers during last week's chaotic protests against student fees.
Jody McIntyre says officers beat him with batons and pulled him across the ground and has now accused the police of premeditated violence during Thursday's protests.
The 20-year-old told The Sunday Telegraph: "I wasn't the only one to suffer that day. The police deliberately used violence to try and provoke the protesters into fighting back and in that way losing public support."
He said: "I managed to get through to the front of the crowd and ended up facing the police, It was clear that they wanted violence. You could see it in their faces. They started using their batons and one hit me on my left shoulder, sending a sharp shooting pain down my arm. Other people around me were being hit on the head.
"Four policemen then grabbed my arms and shoulders and dragged me out of my wheelchair. My brother and some friends tried to pull me back but the police were beating them."
Ten minutes after Mr McIntyre was pulled out of the crowd by riot officers his brother managed to struggle through police lines with his wheelchair. The pair then rejoined the crowd of protesters, this time surging towards back through Parliament Square towards the Department of Education, in Victoria Street.

There's a video of it on the site. another officer has to pull the officer who did it away.

I presume she meant that to be used as a matter of course then it needs to be home office approved much like the current generation of tasers. Other non-home office approved equipment and tactics can be used as long as the force can justify it. (like in the case of everyones favorite steroid monster shotgun suicide looney Raoul Moat)
Not in the same league but a similar vein do you think that a punch in the face is a home office approved technique? It's not but in some cases it's totally justifiable and legal.
