Motorists could be banned from leaving Britain

Ministers are examining whether to use powers to track the travel plans of everyone leaving the country under a system known as e-Borders to deal with the problem of unpaid fines.

is this taking things just a little to far ?

Going abroad is just a get out of jail free card for minor offences, why should people who have done wrong get away with it??

So travelling from John O Groats to Land's End is OK, but Dover to Calais isn't? So much for freedom of movement within the EU.

By going from Lands End to John O'Groats, you are not leaving the UK. When you go to Calais, you are.

Have you read the article at all? If you have, you should not ask this question. Or maybe you have a bunch of unpaid tickets and prefer not to pay them?

But going abroad is also a way of getting away from paying debts in general, so if you have an unpaid debt(eg mortgage) even with payments up to date, you will be stopped from leaving the country?

But you are still within the EU. Travelling in the EU is guaranteed by the Maastricht Treaty.

Access to a country within the EU is guarenteed (though tell that to the newer EU members ), but not the ability to leave ones country of birth/residence/nationality...

As for the person who argued about unpaid debts that's not the issue here as it's not a criminal offence unless obtained by deception...The article explicitly says Fines or Consfication orders

Any EU country has the right to deny citizens from other EU countries entry, as happened just a few weeks ago when Geert Wilders attempted to visit the UK, and was put on the next plane back to Holland. Also, when leaving the country, border officials can run your passport through the computer, and deny you the right to exit if you have any outstanding fines/are wanted for something.

The countries in the EU, however, are still different countries.

Re: Motorists could be banned from leaving Britain

But that still doesn;t dispute the fact that a country still has an individual right to protect it's borders and that includes people leaving as well as people entering..

The EU rights do NOT superceed a countries rights...Otherwise we'd all be paid in Euro's atm

The answer is simple. You want free movement, either pay the fines you have acrued or appeal them and get them cancelled.

The Maastricht treaty does not, AFAIK, remove a country's right to stop people leaving the country if they want to. If it did allow total freedom throughout europe, as you are implying, we would not be allowed to imprison anyone.

Football hooligans can be banned from travelling overseas. Gary Glitter can't travel overseas. People with unpaid fines can be stopped as well.
