I don't have HD but when I 'pretented' that I had I found the following:

HDMI over-ride 'off' (default) - no 5.1 via optical lead. I suspect that is because the 5.1 is being sent via HDMI.

HDMI over-ride 'on' - I now get 5.1 sound on BBC HD via my optical lead. I suspect thats because the over-ride sends 5.1 via optical INSTEAD of HDMI.

Re: Dolby Digital on V+?

You need to check that the HDMI port supports these formats, as well as the optical port.

It sends it over both. It's called "HDMI override" because it overrides what the HDMI-connected device tells it. It would be called something like "enable optical output" if that's what it did.

If you have the HDMI connected to a stereo TV, and the override switched on, you can sometimes hear clicks from the TV. That's due to the TV misinterpreting DD5.1 data as PCM. So it's best to turn the TV down in this case.
