Dolby Digital on V+?

The V+ should be outputting Dolby Digital 5.1 on BBC HD and with high-def VOD content, am I correct in thinking?

I've only had mine a couple of weeks, but have never had it output anything other than stereo sound. I've been through the set-up menus but there's really nothing to change, as everything is going through HDMI.

Should there be any DD 5.1 content at present?

Thanks all.

It depends on what the program is recorded in, not wether the channel carries it or not!

Does turning off HDMI audio overide do anything?
Are you connected optically?

The audio over-ride setting is to split the audio from HDMI and output it over optical. I have that turned off as I use HDMI all the way from V+ to my amp and then to my TV.

Ah, never tried it that way, it's possible that the V+ doesn't support DD5.1 over HDMI? only optical.

It does, but only if your TV supports it. Most HDMI TVs are only stereo. The HDMI Audio Override setting tells the V+ to ignore what the TV says and output 5.1 anyway. So you need to turn it on, moroboshi.

(Does no-one read the FAQ any more?)

I'm not using my TV for sound though (my TV doesn't even have any speakers), -my amp handles the sound. I could hook up an optical into my amp, but as the V+'s HDMI goes into the amp anyway that seems a little pointless.

I'll try the over-ride thing anyway and see if it makes a difference.

My V+ HDMI ouput goes to my amp & you do have to turn override on, otherwise the amp will only receive stereo output from the V+.

I just tried switching over-ride on, and unfortunately while I still got bog standard 2 channel sound from the SD channels, from BBC HD I got no sound at all.

Looks like I'll have to add to my cable clutter and string a pointless toslink from the V+ to my amp. What an impressive piece of well tested kit.

Finally got this sussed how to get 5.1 via optical when you still have a SD TV.

Set the video to HDMI and the overide on - this got the 5.1 via the optical lead working on BBC HD. Then put the video back to Widescreen and the overide stays on!

I got it working by turning over-ride on, and using an optical cable to my amp. So now my amp gets HDMI video and audio from the amp, but it ignores the audio and mixes in the audio from the optical lead.

Truly a pointless bit of cabling as the HDMI lead should carry the 5.1 signal along with the video. But at least it works now.

This should work fine with HDMI to the receiver, then to the TV. That is my setup.

You have to set "HDMI override" to "on" otherwise the audio stream is stereo, as the box detects the TV is a stereo device.

There is definitely no need to resort to optical cables for the audio.

When I tried setting over-ride to on and not using an optical lead I got stereo sound as normal from the SD channels, but no sound at all from BBC HD.

You should get stereo sound from SD channels and DD sound on BBC HD. There must be some other problem. Perhaps your receiver isn't capable of decoding DD via the HDMI port. Many older models aren't.

It's certainly not a limitation of the V+ box (unless yours has a fault).

Hmm, very odd. I'll try it again just to make sure.

My receiver is certainly capable of decoding Dolby Digital, as well as DTS ES, DTS Master HD, and Dolby True HD.
