Small world cable?

Are these people related to Virgin? Does anyone have any experience with them?

They're currently not available in the CH6 area, but does anyone else know if they're available near them?

It also appears they're offering upto 30Mb internet..

They are only in one small franchise area and have no plans to expand from the information i have. As VM and it's predecessors are aware it is extremely expansive to build new network these days and any new company that does build new networks will need to be able to make money fast, That is something that BT VM and SKY will challenge with heavy local advertising. Just look how nasty SKY were with Virgin Media when they started.

Re: Small world cable?

I did a quick postcode check, and they say they're not in the area "YET"..which would surely suggest they have future plans to expand to provide a service for more of the UK, and potentially be a strong competitor with Virgin..?

for them to make a network the size of virgins will require more money than they have and more than a year. if they had the money, by the time they would have a comparable network, virgin would be on docsis3 and 50mb and so speeds should be a lot better on virgin.

if a company with the money virgin have/had can't make a decent cable network what chance does a lot smaller company have?

18mbit ADSL2+ or 18-30mbit via cable

Currently we serve about 40,000 homes in Carlisle, Lancaster, Moroccan, Irvine, Troon and Kilmarnock. The original business was designed to serve 330,000 homes before it was put on hold in 2001. Our Fibre network extends throughout Ayrshire and via Dumfries and Cumbria to Lancashire, so over the next few years we expect to connect at least 200,000 new homes to the network via a combination of new build and unbundling BT exchanges.

Irvine Town, Irvine Stanecastle and Kilmarnock exchanges are all being unbundled currently, and we have dug to each of these exchanges to ensure we have sufficient unmetered bandwidth to be able to offer unlimited broadband and IPTV in the future. Lancaster, Carlisle and Ayr are planned for the next few months, with at least Dumfries, Prestwick, Penrith and Kendal likely to follow in 2008.

We will use ADSL2+ in each of these exchanges and will be offering a full range of broadband and telephony services to residential and business customers. In 2008 we expect to be able to offer pay TV via a set-top box on the telephone line. About 1500 homes in Morecombe will be activated over the next year, and in early 2008 we expect to commence network build-out in Lancaster City.

We are always interested in working with developers building new homes in our area, so please get in contact.

folks,

wightcablenorth/smallworld/omne/aka eon will tell you that the speeds you will receive are up to. very smart marketing by the owner, they DO NOT have a platform that will monitor your BB downloads/uploads
hence this service is marketed as uncapped again the owner will not invest any money(good thing he is tight), the network is built on the Motorola BSR plaforms which run the QAM 256 modulation this will typically give a maximum downstream channel @ 52 Mbps,
since there a currently app 500-750 devices on each BSR do the sums, this is why the speeds will be very poor,
do not be led by guarantees, the infrastucture cannot support this speed, where in the past speed was guaranteed NOT now..!!
No QOS or traffic shapping is employed in this network,
the FIFO scheduling is adopted
20/30meg is unstainable on this network,if popular ,and the speeds will drop for all client classes..

if you want constant high speeds take my advice and look elsewhere..

The Broadband Services Router 2000 (BSR 2000) is a compact, high-performance DOCSIS® 2.0-based CMTS edge router that provides many of the robust features of Motorola’s award-winning BSR 64000, in a low-cost, highly dense platform. The BSR 2000 provides the greatest value in its category for broadband service providers delivering data, voice, data, and multimedia content and services.

The BSR 2000 allows cable operators to generate incremental revenue, reduce operational cost, and more cost-effectively introduce voice, data, and video services to additional subscribers. This compact, high-performance Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) is ideal for small- or medium-sized distribution hubs or for larger sites in the earlier stages of market penetration of broadband service.

Operators can cost-effectively expand service areas while offering rich data, voice, and multimedia services. It offers advanced functionality that allows cable operators to efficiently migrate to DOCSIS® or EuroDOCSIS 2.0 while simultaneously increasing the performance of the existing base of DOCSIS 1.0 and 1.1 cable modems.

It offers four upstream ports and includes RFSentry, which consists of a spare receiver port and the ability to implement Advanced Spectrum Management to monitor cable modem infrastructure without impacting service performance. Operators can implement sophisticated noise cancellation to meet the DOCSIS specifications so they can generate increased revenues, extend the life of installed modems, and deploy DOCSIS or EuroDOCSIS 2.0 cable modems at the pace that makes economic sense.

The compact BSR 2000 can be deployed as a stand-alone unit or in small clusters to cost-effectively extend broadband access infrastructure to additional subscribers. This easy-to-use platform can help carriers develop a competitive edge in defining, deploying, and managing broadband services.

Traffic flows from multiple BSR 2000s can be aggregated by the carrier-class BSR 64000 to bring robust traffic management to a distributed environment. The BSR 2000 changes the value proposition for small or early stage broadband access network locations by offering a highly compact CMTS solution that can be installed in minutes to enable the cost-effective delivery of voice, data, and multimedia content and services.
Does all this sound familiar, speeds upgraded and service goes to the dogs

Yes, because 4 or 5 people having speed problems equals to "most" dont it.

And of course you would be able to show all the others that say it is good. There has been rumours circulating for a couple of weeks now that all is not well with Smallworlds upgrade. Give it a few more weeks to come out in the open .

Re: Small world cable?

I am becoming a bit dubious on this thing as it doesn't matter what postcode you type in on the checker - it always returns "we're nearly there". Even more worryingly, it even gives this result if you type in 'testicles' as the postcode, for example. Me thinks it's not really checking anything. Although, on reflection, checking testicles is always a worthwhile thing to do.

You obviously know very little about the cable industry then.

They are not, never will be, and never can be a strong competitor for Virgin.

They have a few small cables franchises, the extemely small number of franchises that were not swallowed up by NTL or Telewest back in the day.

They cannot operate out of their own franchises (except with ADSL but then the choice of ADSL providors is huge anyway)

The best they can hope for is to be bought out by Virgin.
