But that's just it, if the ordinary man in the street is going to buy a Linux box he won't want to have to bother about which hardware is supported.
He'll just want to go out & buy the kit that does exactly what he wants at the minimum cost & expect it to work.
It's not just the distro providers that need to work at things but the hardware guys too. More of them need to be supporting Linux by providing native drivers...

I`m not too sure theres many ordinary men in the street who will suddenly just decide to buy a Linux powered machine..

Surely anyone thats considering doing so would have also put a little thought/research in to it and will understand enough to know that he should make sure he`s buying supported webcams etc to go with his shiney new Linux pc and not just grabbing anything off the shelf.
I suppose there will be a few though eh.
I`ve been lucky enough to have every piece of hardware we own/ed work perfectly well.Thats been a few desktops, a couple of laptops, all the peripherals and every mp3 player, camera, phone etc in the house.
The only thing i`ve had to chase drivers up for where the Nvidia cards and the Eyetoy. The Nvidia is now the click of a button although the Eyetoy drivers needed compiled.
Whatever that means
