As mentioned, if you're using Ubuntu then Ctrl-Alt-F1 will do it - well, drop you to a login prompt anyway.
The reason I used it is (as you saw on the previous thread) the graphics card in my PC is old enough that Nvidia have lumped it into the "general legacy no feature support" category. Envy is supposed to work out which version of drivers is the best one for your card and install them.
Need to be careful with kernel upgrade updates though - install those and it'll freak out on the next bootup and you need to re-run Envy with it. (Actually, in my case Envy updated the kernel without being asked to but Ubuntu had to catch up later which was a bit irritating.)

Re: another linux question
Try logging in again, then go to Settings -> Sessions and Startup Settings.
Make sure Display Chooser at Login is ticked.

Re: another linux question
Not sure where your at zing but theres the restricted drivers manager in the system>admin menu which i assume you`ve already found.
If that dont work and the howto cobbydaler has given you dont work then there are other methods out there so i would`nt be too put off if things mabey dont work one way right away.....there are always others.
EDIT...are we cooking with gas then??

And there lies in the biggest problem with linux.
Its a rock solid Os stability wise.
It also has some very good applications and desktop managers which provide a nice gui.
But there's still a lot of stuff that is just To hard for the average joe to get their head around and that's why it remains mostly an enthusiasts OS, at least on the desktop anyway.
They just need to crack that user friendliness aspect and then perhaps it will appeal to more people, particularly as a lot of people are buying low cost computers just to browse the internet chat with friends and type a few documents, play some music.etc.
All of which Linux can do fine providing you can figure out how to set it up for your hardware.
Yes its getting a lot better but its not there quite yet.

I wondered about that one after I'd posted it - I'm running XFCE now rather than Gnome.

Perhaps if they just bought Pre-installed Ubuntu machines then those installation issues would`nt be a problem.
The later releases of Ubuntu are a lot more "user friendly" than earlier versions but if it can come as far as it has in just the year i`ve used it then i wonder what they will do in 5???

I use my kids Eyetoys as webcams but...
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Webcam
If anyone is going out there way to buy a shiney new Ubuntu powered pc then surely they would also make sure they bought supported hardware too.
We`re all clueless when we do something for the very first time eh.

But that's just it, if the ordinary man in the street is going to buy a Linux box he won't want to have to bother about which hardware is supported.
He'll just want to go out & buy the kit that does exactly what he wants at the minimum cost & expect it to work.
It's not just the distro providers that need to work at things but the hardware guys too. More of them need to be supporting Linux by providing native drivers...
