Vista and Speedtouch 780 router
I had a wierd problem with my Speedtouch router over the weekend.
It seems that if I log in to Vista, and have the Advanced Network Discovery service running (can't remember if it's called that, but it maps your network, as well as giving you a staggering amount of control over it), it sometimes tells my router to shutdown the Internet Connection.
I didn't realise this at first. I was just happily messing around, and all of a sudden, messenger signed out, and Thunderbird complained it couldn't access my email.
I did all the normal stuff (checked connections, disabled the firewall) and got nothing.
So, I looked at the router log, and, sure enough, it had recieved a UPNP command called "ForceTerminate" from my Vista machine. This appears to have caused it to shut down it's DSL interface.
Can't find any documentation on the command, but I've enabled "Enhanced UPNP Security" on the router, which, according to the Help system should stop any machine being able to issue a commmand that affects other IPs.
BTW, how did I get the connection back? Did a Factory Reset.
