Vista and Speedtouch 780 router
I had a wierd problem with my Speedtouch router over the weekend.
It seems that if I log in to Vista, and have the Advanced Network Discovery service running (can't remember if it's called that, but it maps your network, as well as giving you a staggering amount of control over it), it sometimes tells my router to shutdown the Internet Connection. I didn't realise this at first. I was just happily messing around, and all of a sudden, messenger signed out, and Thunderbird complained it couldn't access my email. I did all the normal stuff (checked connections, disabled the firewall) and got nothing. So, I looked at the router log, and, sure enough, it had recieved a UPNP command called "ForceTerminate" from my Vista machine. This appears to have caused it to shut down it's DSL interface. Can't find any documentation on the command, but I've enabled "Enhanced UPNP Security" on the router, which, according to the Help system should stop any machine being able to issue a commmand that affects other IPs. BTW, how did I get the connection back? Did a Factory Reset. |
Re: Vista and Speedtouch 780 router
Stuart, I do know that the ST780 by default should have an idle time or anything like that... I havent heard of any issues with the ST780 and Vista and I do frequently visit dutch techie websites where peeps got the ST's and havent had problems with them, just the wlan cards.
I dont think its in the Vista machine at all, but then it does sound suspicious that you got the forceterminate error. With regards to the reset did you do it via the software or say pressing the button on the back of the unit? |
Re: Vista and Speedtouch 780 router
It's not actually an error. The router logs it as a command. Similarly if portmappings are changed, that is logged as a command.
Oh, and the router did remain available, as did my network (I could access the other pc, just not the outside world), so I was able to pick the "Factory Reset" option on the router's website. |
