so who was it man utd paid for 28 million for as the answer eludes me at the moment

Wasn't it Rio (from an English club to another)?

They both cost the same then, nothing

Anyway, you'll probably find that it's not English clubs that result in price rises - it's Chelsea in particular who have distorted the transfer market
For some unknown reason English clubs always pay over the odds for English talent, the only difference is this time the talent plays for an oversea's club

Re: Football Talk 2006/2007 Season

As for Shevchenko, doesn't that rather prove my point about Chelsea distorting the market? Ignoring the fact that he hasn't (yet!) exactly set the Premiership alight, if reports are to be believed, he was bought over Mourinhos head, and purely because he's a personal friend of Abramovich - not really the best example...

Fergie's not bad at recognising when to get of players, even if they make a loss.

Because Beckham Is A Brand more than a player and Man utd Got Larsson on loan because the owner took out more loans than nick leeson to buy the club and are not a solvent as people are lead to believe

and fergie is not a bad manager but in my opinion has overstayed his tenure at man utd by 3 or 4 years

Yes, he should have gone to a club who'd be topping the premiership by 6 points halfway through the season.

Man U aren't solvent? They may not be as well off as they used to be, but they're not exactly crawling cap-in-hand to Yeovil to loan their spare striker, are they?

You could say the same about Juan Veron and it is quite common in Europe for chairmen to do the signings, presumably that's why they have coaches and not managers, maybe this is the start of us going down that route?

True but to say chelsea started this ball rolling is not the case

English clubs were paying over the odds long before chelsea have the financial muscle they have now

and perhaps Shevchenko was a bad example but there are others

I'm sure people on here can come up with some

Of course another way to look at it is, if United blow it this season, how long will it have been since you won anything other than the league cup

I certainly hope not as i think a manager should be in complete control no interference from above

hearts is the prime example on course to win spl last season chairman got involved situation gone to hell

west ham this season 2 argentines bought in and despite what pardew said he didn't want them disrupted the club look where they are now bottom 3

this is a route we want to avoid going down

It seems to work for them and with the right level of respect shown and properly defined roles, there is no reason why it shouldn't work here to, in fact it might even be better for the clubs.

Hearts are challenging now, where were they before the Latvian took over?

I never saw AP complain once about the Argentineans and why should he, two young, world class players, they should be welcomed by any club that has ambition, I see one of them is off to Liverpool now and the other is still being talked about in the same breath as the likes of Maradona
