Poxy Proxy servers

Is there currently an issue with the proxy servers? When I use the default (ie no proxy server set) I cant get a web page, when I then ping all of the proxy serversi I mostly get timeouts, or very long ping times eg

Pinging cache1-blfs.server.ntli.net [62.254.32.4] with 32 bytes of data:

Request timed out.

Request timed out.

Request timed out.

Request timed out.

Ping statistics for 62.254.32.4:

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),

Pinging cache2-blfs.server.ntli.net [62.254.32.5] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 62.254.32.5: bytes=32 time=62ms TTL=247

Reply from 62.254.32.5: bytes=32 time=29ms TTL=247

Reply from 62.254.32.5: bytes=32 time=27ms TTL=247

Ping statistics for 62.254.32.5:

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 3, Lost = 1 (25% loss),

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

Minimum = 27ms, Maximum = 62ms, Average = 39ms

Pinging cache3-blfs.server.ntli.net [62.254.32.6] with 32 bytes of data:

Pinging cache4-blfs.server.ntli.net [62.254.32.7] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 62.254.32.7: bytes=32 time=29ms TTL=247

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

Any help appreciated

Cheers

Re: Poxy Proxy servers

sounds like a problem with your connection rather than the proxies, for example from here:

try running a speed test on www.pcpitstop.com/internet/bandwidth.asp

and see what results you get. Make sure you have no other applications accessing the internet at the same time.

Dan Elwell's Broadband Speed Test (unregistered)
Speed Test Report 04/06/20 22:06 - Quick test

Test conducted at: 20/06/2004 22:06:28
Test sequence: Quick test

Please note that these results are a snapshot of this particular moment. Run the test a few times to ensure maximum accuracy. Although the test has been constructed to be highly accurate, no guarantees can be made to the level of accuracy experienced in everyday use.

Test 1: Ping times to UK servers

Ideally, you should get a result of around 30 ms (lower is better)

mirror.ac.uk: 32 ms
gnu.teleglobe.net: 100.8 ms
hands.com: 19 ms

This result is much poorer than expected and should be investigated.

Test 2: Ping times to European servers

Ideally, you should get a result of around 50 ms (lower is better)

sunet.se: 54.5 ms
cs.tu-berlin.de: 49 ms
uvsq.fr: 44.3 ms

The results of this test indicate no problems.

Test 3: Ping times to east-coast USA servers

Ideally, you should get a result of around 120 ms (lower is better)

mirror.nocservices.com: 117.5 ms
ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu: 145.3 ms
mirror.nocservices.com: 93.3 ms

The results of this test indicate no problems.

Test 4: Ping times to west-coast USA servers

Ideally, you should get a result of around 160 ms (lower is better)

mirrors.usc.edu: 170.3 ms
mirrors.usc.edu: 170.8 ms
cybertrails.com: 160.5 ms

The results of this test indicate no problems.

Test 5: Download speeds from UK servers

Ideally, you should get a result of around 1024 Kb/s (higher is better)

blueyonder.lkams.kernel.org: 966 Kb/s

The results of this test indicate no problems.

Test 6: Upload speeds to the Speed Test Server

Ideally, you should get a result of around 256 Kb/s (higher is better)

Not conducted: You must register this software in order to perform this test.

Please click 'What's This?' for information on registering this software to enable this test.

Test 7: Packet loss en route to a UK server

Ideally, you should get a result of around 0 % (lower is better)

f2s.com: 0 %
vantage.myby.co.uk: 0 %

The results of this test indicate no problems.

End of testing.

NTL Proxy Issue

There would seem to be some issues with the default NTL proxies used for the Reading area at the moment (Winnersh proxy I believe).

When I go to Tom's Hardware while connected by the default proxy, my browsers (Firefox and IE) are unable to connect to their advert server. Switching to a different proxy, NTL or non-NTL, and it is able to connect with no problems.

Obviously in this instance, not being served with adverts is not necessary the greatest problem in the world, but I`m forced to wonder whether other sites or elements of pages could potentially be blocked due to this issue.

I would call NTL, but I'll be damned if I`m paying for a premium rate call to tell them this.
