Re: Virgin Media down accross the country.
No issues here, been up all day.
Hundreds of users is hardly a major issue tbh.

Bigger issues going on in the world than BB going down for a few hours. I would expect any company to have issues from time to time.

Really not everyone. Some across the network, not all.I don't work for them and I never have and I frankly think they provide an excellent service.

Exactly as its only a major issue when there are outages that affect quite a few parts of the country.
Thats not to say for those having broadband problems is any less important.

Had the issue yesterday morning up here in Teesside about 8am but sorted by 10am. Has been fine since and to be fair have had very few issues with Virgin. Been with them since late 90s

Re: Virgin Media down accross the country.
It was bad enough that our IT Helpdesk (for ~50k users) put up a banner saying Virgin Media were having nationwide problems and that they should be contacted, not IT Support. They only ever do that when the volume gets high enough to detect a pattern, so it wasnt a small outage.
I noticed that some websites were completely unaffected (BBC was fine for example) but AWS hosted sites were inaccessible. All resolved by 10 am though.

Re: Virgin Media down accross the country.
How odd that some websites were affected and others not. You'd think that if there was a fault it would stop all traffic, or doesn't it work like that?
Maybe it's akin to a blockage on the motorway where small vehicles can get past, but not large trucks??

Re: Virgin Media down accross the country.
Maybe those websites were hosted in the OVH datacentre that burned down on Wednesday.

Re: Virgin Media down accross the country.
FWIW: BN3 7N* cable segment down on my brig19 200/20 provisioned tier at 03:52 (10thFeb2021) 150 auto predicted return at 06:05 and auto Re-connected at 5:32gmt.
My other Brig19 350/35 tier on same cable segment needed a POR in order to reconnect 0612gmt.

It was an equipment fault in Manchester, so you were only affected if your traffic was routed that way.
So like a crash on the M60. You don't care if you're going to London.

Thanks for explaining SP.
If a particular trainline is blocked they can route them via other lines (albeit it takes far longer). Is it possible to configure the internet to do this too?

Yes, that's exactly what was done. Often the systems will do it automatically without you even noticing the break, but in this case it required manual intervention.
