wireless router and cable modem connectivity issue
Hello chaps,
im using a cable modem on a 1 meg service, and am having problems with my new super cheapo wireless router/spi firewall.
problem is that every 2 days it seems to lose connectivity to the modem and beyond, does anyone know that the modems require devices to re-lease ips at 48 hour intervals, as this would explain my problem.
thanks in advance
D

Re: wireless router and cable modem connectivity issue
Yes, the router gets given a 48 hour lease on the IP address via DHCP - most devices automatically renew the lease after half this time, ie 24 hours.

Re: wireless router and cable modem connectivity issue
not mine obviously, thanks for the quick reply though,
does the ip remain constant usually though, if you leave it on?
thanks

Re: wireless router and cable modem connectivity issue
Yes, my ntl IP doesn't change very often - in fact there are lots of posts with people having trouble changing their IP and want to change it (only sure way is to change network card or from usb to Ethernet or vice versa). It only changes when ntl do major work on the local network.
I wouldn't recommend setting the IP address as static though - what router/ firmware maybe there are ways to configure it?

Re: wireless router and cable modem connectivity issue
hi, the router is a sucky safecom cheapo special, it doesnt release the ip periodically, and my ip seems to change on my cable modem evry 2 days, and judging by the addresses i would say uses the various subnets in the 86. range. strangly the modem changes ip even though its left on all the time. Any ideas?

Re: wireless router and cable modem connectivity issue
Many people will recommend the Linksys WRT54G/WRT54GS.
I've had no problems with a Buffalo WYR-G54 on ntl. Think this may have just been superseded by a newer model now though. Even so, you may be able to pick one up cheaply because of this.

Re: wireless router and cable modem connectivity issue
It seems their must be some incompatability between the router and NTL, but they do claim compatability with some models and NTL.

NB Linksys' good reputation was based on the older WRT54G/GS which run Linux and are compatible with 3rd party firmware. The new equivalent is a WRT54GL which has more memory than the newer standard versions, and still runs Linux.
I use an old WRT54GS v1.1 with Hyperwrt Thibor firmware
