Opening Ports - NTL Style

Hey there,

Well firstly, im trying to open up around 3 different ports in order to allow access to one of my programs to work and connect properly to the internet.

I have NTL Broadband, know my IP address and such, but trying to access the IP doesnt work, so I called NTL up and asked for a Public IP and they told me that I cant have it and that they only give it to buisness customers, not normal home.

So does anybody know how I can access my own ports to open them considering my Gateway IP, subnet and current IP dont work when entering them into the URL for any internet browser?

Btw, im not exactly liturate when it comes to all these ports and IP configuration and such, so bare with me lol

Thanks,
~Dave

It would be useful to know a bit more about your configuration. What OS are you using? Do you have any security software installed like Norton, Zone Alarm, etc? Do you connect your PC direct to the cable modem, or do you go via your own router or firewall? If you have a router or hardware firewall installed, what model is it, etc, etc...

Re: Opening Ports - NTL Style

public ip is easy to find. if you got a cable modem then im sure you'll have a static ip ( one that doesnt change often. maybe not at all ) Just visit http://checkip.dyndns.org and that should be your public ip address. I tried it through a proxy and it still got my right ip. as for opening ports. you need to know your LAN ip. if you have a router and you want to forward the ports then you dont need to know your WAN or Public ip unless your running a server. goto http://www.portforward.com and select your router and model and then the program you want to set up. or just read how to forward ports on your specific router.

Thats the problem lol. I have a modem with a dynamic IP, and when I tried to get onto my current IP via web browser, it says page cannot be found :/

You cannot open ports in the modem, you need to open them in the firewall. What program are you trying to get working?

Re: Opening Ports - NTL Style

An Open Beta for a game, I need: UDP 8872 outbound, UDP 8872 inbound and UDP 8872 outbound all open apparently.

I have two firewalls btw, windows and zone alarm. Windows i never use normally, and zonealarm always

Re: Opening Ports - NTL Style

Turn off windows and then you have to enable those ports in Zone Alarm for that program. You don't need to mess with your IP address or modem settings this is jsut a problem with your Firewall configuration.

Re: Opening Ports - NTL Style

Problem is zonealarm doesnt allow for specific ports to be opened unless you have the premium version apparently, and the windows firewall only allows for the port number, not the other bits mentioned above.

Re: Opening Ports - NTL Style

Toooon, ZA Pro allows port altering, however Zonealarm basic should allow the software to open the ports back into your system if its allowed server access.

BTW, the IP address you have is public, so I assumed you asked for a Static IP address?

Yup, but I have no idea which programs specifically would contain allowance for the above ports, since its a game with another client for internet multiplayer if you get what I mean. Aka in this case Gamespy arcade

Re: Opening Ports - NTL Style

Allow both applications the ports and you can then disable one of the apps at a time to see if both are needed access.

Re: Opening Ports - NTL Style

Really? Have you tried deleting them all from the ZA list and then allow it to find the one that it is using for the game?
