Extreeme Difficulties with sharing NTL Internet.

Ok I have>

... Comp1 >>>> Ntl Cable Modem
... /
... /
... Router
... /
... /Comp1
... /Comp2
... /Comp3

I hope thats clear

===========================

The problem is the ip address conflict.

(Comp1)
- I set NTL/Internet connection to

"Obtain an IP address automatically"
"Obtain DHS server address automatically"

- I have tried Network with both

Ip address > 192.168.0.101
Subnet mask> 255.255.255.0

When I try to enable sharing on internet connection this happens.

"An error occured whilst Internet Connection Sharing was enabled.

Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) cannot be enabled due to an IP
address conflict on the network. ICS requires the host to be configured to use 192.168.0.1. Please ensure that no other client on the network is configured to use 192.169.0.1"

So when I give network
Ip address > 192.168.0.1
Subnet mask> 255.255.255.0

An Ip address conflict appears.

Im not 100% sure but I think Ntl internet is trying to use
Ip address > 192.168.0.1
Which makes things impossible

===================

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Re: Extreeme Difficulties with sharing NTL Internet.

Why isnt the Cable Modem connected directly to the router's WAN port?

That's what Port Forwarding is for.

Re: Extreeme Difficulties with sharing NTL Internet.

The only way is to put the router in between
Cable modem and Comp1?

Is there no way to solve the ip address problem?

Re: Extreeme Difficulties with sharing NTL Internet.

Course there is, just change the IP addressing used, but the BEST way is

Cable Modem
|
Router
|- Comp 1
|- Comp 2
|- Comp 3
|- Comp X

And you CAN host games and other things from behind a router, not sure where you heard you couldn't

Re: Extreeme Difficulties with sharing NTL Internet.

I assume you have the correct type of router for Cable Broadband?

Mine has the cable modem in the STB - this is connected via Ethernet direct to WAN on Cable Router. This is the only connection I've got. All the PCs and laptops (6 in all) run completely wirelessly - no probs connecting to either wireless network or internet.

When kids friends come over, they jump on the network with their Xboxes (or whatever) no problems.

My only concern is that I'm not on a secure network, so anyone can piggy-back my connection!

Indeed - I have a cod 2 server here on my fileserver - that's behind the router.

I'd definately make the router the point of entry for your cable modem and just set your ports up for gaming.

Well why don't you secure it then and give the WEP or WPA key to only those who need to know?

Laziness!

And those who need to know wouldn't have a clue!

I will give it a go soon - just don't want to screw the whole shooting match up if I do.

I think i'd do it asap, don't you?

How do you know someone isn't downloading kiddie porn or anything via your connection?

It shouldn't take you long to sort it

If you get stuck you can always ask for help here - we're mostly a nice bunch....
