Key thing is the power off the STB, and restart it after you've got the new wiring in place. STB <ethernet> WAN port of the router - router LAN port(s) <ethernet> PC(s).
I don't specifically know the netgear route, but provided it is a broadband unit, not specifically designed (does not include) an ADSL modem, it should be fine.
You will need to register the router with the STB. This should be straight forward. The first PC that tries to connect to the internet via the router should get redirected to the ntl registration page. You'll need the customer details originally supplied.
I'd leave the PCs to get all settings automatically, both network, and internet explorer. No fixed IPs or anything. If you went for fixed IPs you'd have to setup gateways and all sorts adding to the complications.
