Router / Samsung STB / NTL

I have been asked to configure a router which will connect several computers to a Samsung 2100C set-top box, which is part of an NTL cable broadband installation. I'm reasonably confident that I know what I'm doing, but I don't have much time to experiment.

I have checked that the individual computers work OK - I set them to use DHCP and let the STB generate IP addresses. I am aware that if I change machines, I need to unplug and restart the STB. The proposed router is a Netgear WGR614 used in wired mode.

Is there anything special I should know ? Should I give the computers and router fixed IP addresses ? If not, will the fact that the router generates the IP addresses for everything "behind" it confuse the STB?

I'd be very grateful for some pointers.

Re: Router / Samsung STB / NTL

Key thing is the power off the STB, and restart it after you've got the new wiring in place. STB <ethernet> WAN port of the router - router LAN port(s) <ethernet> PC(s).

I don't specifically know the netgear route, but provided it is a broadband unit, not specifically designed (does not include) an ADSL modem, it should be fine.

You will need to register the router with the STB. This should be straight forward. The first PC that tries to connect to the internet via the router should get redirected to the ntl registration page. You'll need the customer details originally supplied.

I'd leave the PCs to get all settings automatically, both network, and internet explorer. No fixed IPs or anything. If you went for fixed IPs you'd have to setup gateways and all sorts adding to the complications.

Re: Router / Samsung STB / NTL

Thank you very much for the prompt reply. I spent some time yesterday connecting the various machines, so I am familiar with powering off the STB and negotiating the registration screen. Also managed to find a manual for the router, so I know where to go looking when I configure it.
