Wired Router and 2 PC's

Hi there,
I have recently took up ntl broadband. I have a NetGear wired router GS605UK. I connect 2 laptops to the router and the router with the Cable Modem. One computer is getting a direct IP to the ntl network and has normal Internet access, while the other one gets some wired auto-configuration IP and does not have any Internet access. I contacted ntl, they said that i have to use NetGear's software to specify the Primary and Secondary DNS. First of all the router i have does not come with any software, and the netgear website does not have any software either. So, i entered the Primary and Sec DNS IP's that ntl gave me to the Local Area Connection Properties, under TCP/IP protocol - properties - advanced - DNS. It still does the same thing. The machine that enters first to the router, gets a direct IP and then the other machine gets that wierd IP (169.254.190..)

Sorry Guys, i do not understand what's going on. Before ntl we had Bulldog and i didnt have any problems like that, a least on connecting more than one PC. We had other problems with the connectivity but that's another issue.

Anybody has an idea?
Any help would be appreciated,
thanks
John

Re: Wired Router and 2 PC's

hi

Looking up that model number it says it is a switch, not a router.

- did the adsl modem you used to connect to Bulldog also function as a router, by any chance?

Re: Wired Router and 2 PC's

Sorry i was just looking on the differences between router and switch. Maybe the old adsl modem was a router as well. Can you explain to me in a few words what does the router do ? and what router you suggest me to buy ?

Re: Wired Router and 2 PC's

To answer your question about router software, it normally relates to onboard software that is on the router itself. This is normally accessed by typing in the routers IP address and you then specify the settings in that.

See HERE for an explanation as to what a router is and how it differs from a Switch.

As for reccomended routers, check out HERE for a list of reccomended routers that will work with an NTL connection.
I reccomend ones by Linksys.

Thanks Halcyon

- I'd agree with your recommendation for Linksys.

- @ John, do make sure any router you get has a 100Mb WAN interface

Re: Wired Router and 2 PC's

OK, 3 questions:

1. 54 Mbps is not enough ? The price is double to go to 108 MBps. More than 100 pounds
2. Should i go for a Router with an ADSL Modem as well, or one without ?
e.g. netgear DG834G or WGR614
I dont want to find myself in a situation like i am now, where i already spent 40 pounds around Christmas to buy the switch and now i need to pay again to buy a router ? Is the router+modem the best solution for home - broadband - networking or because usually ISP's provide adsl modem i will probably never need to buy one ?
3. You say Linksys is better than netgear ? A friend of mine has Ntl with a wireless netgear and works fine. Why linksys ? Cheaper? More compatible or better quality ?

thanks a lot in advance
John

ok

1. You may be getting confused with wireless standards. The 54Mb/s measures speed over the LAN, and is not the same as the external WAN interface. The reason you need 100Mb/s for the external interface is to ensure full compatibility with the NTL 10Mb/s tier of service - even if you don't intend to have that speed available, at first.

2. No, NTL insist that only equipment supplied by them is connected directly to their network, and in any case anything ADSL will simply not work.

3. No particular reason, other than I have used one for the last few years, with no problems - there are some non Linksys, dead cheap ones on Ebuyer, if you are concerned about the price.
