Setting up wireless internet...PLEASE HELP!

Hi, this may be a really simple thing to do, but i'm having problems setting up a wireless internet connectio. I have no instructions as i bought off ebay , so hopefully someone can help. I'm currently with AOL broadband and have a BT Voyager 105 USB ADSL modem. I bought a Linksys BEFW11S4 router but have no idea how i am supposed to connect this. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.!

Re: Setting up wireless internet...PLEASE HELP!

not enough info on the router not a full model number.Download manual from here

How many pcs/laptops and have all that need it got a wireless adapter installed

and by the way to the forum

Edit It may appear you have bought a router not a modem router so you will have to leave the modem connected to a pc and share the internet connection wirelessly using the router as an access point

The router you have expects to connect to an ethernet output from a modem, not USB. I don't believe you will be able to connect the two.

Ideally ditch the modem, and router (ebay it again) and get a combined ADSL wireless router, or ditch the modem and get one that has an ethernet output that you can connect to the router you now have.

True, but that's getting rather complex, defeats the object of a router really in that the master PC always needs to be on, and you need a USB and network card in the master PC to enable the internet connection sharing options.

Re: Setting up wireless internet...PLEASE HELP!

You need the Linksys 54 modem/router/hub you have brought a router which can only be used with cable internet connections. As you have BT you need a router with a modem in it to be able to ditch the voyager modem.

Sell it on and get the right piece of kit.

Hope this helps.
Thanks!

Not true. The router the original poster has purchased is perfectly adequate for use with ADSL broadband - provded that the modem she is using has an ethernet connection. It is the fact her modem does not have ethernet that is the problem here, not the router.

True to a point, but seeing as she now has a router, if she can get an ethernet ADSL modem cheap on ebay the same way she got the router, that might be better than going looking for an all-in-one modem and router.

---- ---- ----

Guys - I have said this before and I'll say it again - we need to stop assuming knowledge on the part of people who come on here looking for help, especially first-time posters we don't know. All this talk of model numbers, ad-hoc networks, connection types ... most of that information is unnecessary, not to mention excessively complex.

I am no expert at networking, but even I could see from the OP that the simple, straightforward answer to the question asked is:

"Your modem does not have the approprate socket to connect it to the router. You need a modem with Ethernet, not USB. You have two options:

1. Go back to eBay and look for an ADSL modem with ethernet. You will be able to connect this to the router.

2. Ditch the modem and the router, and buy a combined ADSL modem/router, thus removing the need for any connections.

Either way, I'm afraid you're going to have to spend some more money. Let us know when you have decided what you want to do, and we can talk you through setting it all up.

Hope that helps - and by the way, to Cable Forum! "

Yeah Chris I take you points but as a novice the all in one box would be far and wide the simple one to set up and configure and neater in apperance.

Voyager modems only come with a USB output hence my reply fella.

Some good points raised though.

I agree the all-in-one aproach is neater (I have a Linksys ADSL/router myself), was just taking a cue from the fact the OP bought her router on eBay - she may be on a budget and looking for the cheapest rather than the tidiest option.
